I'm w/you Orca. I live in CT and can NEVER find these programs when forum members says they'll be on - I'm guessing our scheduling on the East Coast is very diff't from everywhere else. Someone posted last week that this program is on PBS (?) but I couldn't find it there. From my cable provider I can only catch it on SpeedVision and only saw it on Sunday morning at 10:30 (I think) - and at that it was a re-run of last week's program, where they reviewed a Panoz Esperante (nice car). Anybody in the know on this one?

they're not the first to show the evo faster than the sti 0-60. it's plain wierd the amount of variability between these magazines. it either shows a) the variability between test drivers and/or b) the importance of report the environmental condition (temp, humidity, altitude, etc) at the time of the test.

I read in Motortrend or somewhere that the reason why the Evo beats the STi from 0-60 is that because with the Sti you have to shift to 3rd gear to get to 60 (due to the 6 spd tranny) while the Evo can get to 60 just with the 2nd gear...Basically...the 0.1 sec lost was due to the shifting from 2nd - 3rd gear with the Sti...

i still gotta ask motortrend (or whoever) how come car and driver got 4.6 outa the sti and 5.1 outa the evo. also, i've seen a max speed by gear chart for both the evo and sti and both needed third to get to 60. on the other hand i've seen others that show the opposite. one would thing something as basic as this would be definitive. sheesh.

I guess it all ends up to your preference.

PS: BTW, I finally saw an EVO (black) in person up close this past weekend...It actually looked way better in person than in the pictures...I can't wait to see an STi in person...But of course my choice of styling is still the STi...

Cool down after driving? First turbo.....

I'm not sure how much I trust MotorWeek.

It's a decent program and all, and they do try to point out pluses as well as minuses for vehicles, but I'm not sure where their bias lies.

As for the 0.1 second faster Mitsu time, it all depends on how they figure it out (how many runs, whether they throw out the quickest and slowest times), plus the other factors, such as humidity.

It almost seemed as if they were afraid to pick one over the other, except to say that the older folks liked the STi better.

Maybe that's because they know how much build quality it takes to last more than 30,000 miles, just like Subie does ;)

I am on east coast as well (MD). MotorWeek comes on Thursdays on PBS (ch 22, I think for cable and DirecTV) at 8:30 pm. The same episode then shows up on Speed TV on Sunday morning and repeat on evenings I think.

However, I personally did not see this comparo; I know it was not on this past Thursday.

Look at the review in Automobile (June 2003, page 47 -- 5th page of article) -- it can be explained by the fact that the Evo gets to 58mph in 2nd gear at redline (7000rpm), but the fuel cutoff doesn't come until 7500rpm, so it can make it to almost 62mph without shifting. The STi makes it to about 54mph at redline, but the rev limiter hits at about 7200rpm, so there is hardly any extra room.
