Over the holidays, I finally put down a deposit on an STi. The reason I delayed as long as I had is because of the run around I had gotten from all the dealers near me on Long Island. I finally ended up going with Steve Lewis Subaru in Northampton, MA. I got some interesting info from them that may or may not be true.
#1 - They said that the latest report is that the base STi will be $5000 more than the base WRX. I said, "So, the WRX is $24,995, so that makes the STi $29,995?" and they said yes. Who knows if this is true, but it would be nice.
#2 - Apparently, in the past Subaru dealers have ordered cars for nonexistant customers so they could get more of them on the lot to sell. This was especially true for more limitted edition cars like the WRX. Subaru has instituted a new policy with the STi where the dealer will have to prove that the car that was ordered for John Doe actually gets delivered to John Doe, or Subaru takes the car back and penalizes the company. It's a 3 strike deal, and on the thrird strike the dealer is no longer allowed to sell STi's. There are other penalties for strikes 1 and 2, but I don't remember. Something about less alocations for the dealer. I think this is a good idea, since the people that actually want the cars will have a better chance at getting them if they haven't been "ordered" by dealers that don't have buyers yet.
Anyways, just some info I thought I'd pass on. The first one will be moot in a few hours, and the second is some food for thought.
