Loud metallic rattle at low rpms, gears 1 and two, **now with vid

Hi guys, I've been having this issue for many months now...
It's only a sound, I don't feel anything from the shifter or steering but it's horrible and would probably scare alot of people here

Anyway, the sound happens when I push the gas pedal a little more than what the car needs to get going. If I keep it to a slow accelerating crawl, the sound doesn't happen.

It goes away at around 2500-2800rpm

Doesn't happen at all in neutral.
You can keep the sound happening if you keep the rpms steady with the brake pedal...

Some sort of grinding rattling metallic sound

I'm thinking tranny, diffs, motor/tranny mounts...

I don't think it's a heat shield, since most are gone.

it's kinda short too, rkrkrkrkrkrkrkrkrkrkrk.... then nothing, from 1500-2500 rpms approx. and lasts a second maybe...

I've been told not to worry about it (two subie garages said). I'm not worried about it, I just want to stop hearing it, it's embarrassing... :p

thanks

Re: Loud metallic rattle at low rpms, gears 1 and two, clairvoyant needed.

I believe I have the same sound as you. I notice mine when I pull in to the parking lot at work and I've given it gas to get up the hill and then let it coast in 2nd gear and the rpms slowly fall from 3-3500 down to 1500. Sounds like it's right under the console or slightly back. Only thing I can think is that it's the ediff reacting or something similar. Had it in both my 2011 and my 2013 so I'm not too worried about it. My jeep makes somewhat similar noises from the upgraded gears and lockers I have in it. Not exactly the same but sort of similar

Nah... mine seems to come from the engine bay...

sounds like something metal is slightly rubbing a sawblade for a short time

Dwebber is describing gear rattle. Its probably what your car is doing also, its just hard to identify where drivetrain noises come from especially if your not mechanically inclined and know how your car is put together( not that im inferring you dont know whst your talking about). Just about every manual tranny ive driven has it to somd extent.
Re: Loud metallic rattle at low rpms, gears 1 and two, clairvoyant needed.

This is the first car i've had this particular problem... auto or manual

what dwebber is experiencing is probably the heat shield rattling, which is exactly where he is describing... the gears are a closer to the engine bay.
Re: Loud metallic rattle at low rpms, gears 1 and two, clairvoyant needed.

No cause if it was a heatshield it would rattle all the time at those rpm's and heatshields sound very tinny. And btw the transmission is not in the engine bay

I've had many heatshields rattle at various yet specific rpms...

I know where the tranny is, don't worry. I've never said it was in the engine bay

Video will negate your need for some clairvoyant auto guru. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is priceless.

This is what i was referring to when talking about location of the tranny and how ot sounds like gear rattle. I was not talking about your "engine bay" noise. Good luck with that:tup:
Re: Loud metallic rattle at low rpms, gears 1 and two, clairvoyant needed.

It's really just a loud transmission in general and aggressive as well hence the noises down low, I have the same noise and two master techs said not to worry
Re: Loud metallic rattle at low rpms, gears 1 and two, clairvoyant needed.

my rear 02 sensor was loose once and when idling it would just rattle-tat-rattle-tat-rattle. but as soon as i got on it the pressure from the dp would stop it from rattling. just tightened the 02 sensor and rocked on. just an idea. that can kinda sound like engine area.

I have RPM specific loud transmission syndrome. 30K ago a dealer told me I needed to replace the transmission output shaft bearing.
Re: Loud metallic rattle at low rpms, gears 1 and two, clairvoyant needed.

Finally made a vid... hopefully you can hear it

Ok, bumpity.

Can you guys hear it? It's louder in second gear, I slowed down to make sure i got a full low rpm sweep.

Any ideas???

(ty Got2Boostit2, i saw what you did there)

Deleted. DWbbers car is too new for my first guess
Re: Loud metallic rattle at low rpms, gears 1 and two, clairvoyant needed.

How about a bad clutch, or pressure plate... could that be making that rattle?
Hello, I have a GC8 swapped with an 03 WRX engine and 04 STI tranny.
I recently upgraded the turbo, just a regular td04 but with the HL-19T upgrade.

After getting the car e-tuned, a couple of weeks later I started hearing this weird noise.

The first time it happened I was going uphill on a freeway and it sounded like a flattering noise. After that I faintly started hearing a kind of grinding noise concentrated at about 3500 rpms. Ithttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNfi10jowWs has been getting a little louder, but it's still hard to hear it on the videos. The noise is not really heard by just revving the engine or if the car is in neutral.

I've heard people say it's a rod bearing, tranny, etc, and someone even posted that replacing the turbo fixed his issue.

Let me know if anyone has had a real solution for this noise.
