i know almost everyone here will agree with me that the new impreza is one of the ugliest subarus ever. I was wondering, out of all the rally cars that had stock counter parts, what would you consider to be the 5 best looking stock cars based on the rally cars (or the other way around)?

My list:

1. Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 6
2. Puegot 206 (2002)
3. Ford Escort Cosworth
4. Lancia Integrale
5. Impreza WRX ( 98 )

And while we're at it...

The ugliest list...

1. The 83 audi coupe
2. The Skoda
3. The 02 Impreza
4. Saab 93 (pick a year)
5. Ford Focus

And i also have a question that i cant find an answer for. What is with Subaru's infatuation with Australia? No offense to any Aussie's but they are a japanese car company who has the australian emblem on their grills, almost all of the big subaru tuners are out of australia and they have a car named the outback as well as the rest of their line advertised by Crocodile Dundee. What's goin on?

Not me, I don't think it's one of the ugliest Subie's ever, it's just different. I think its biggest problem are the regular headlights. They look too big because they are so open. The HID's, on the other hand, look cool. Especially the one's from the WRC Impreza.

Anyways here is my limited list:
1. Peugeot 206 WRC
2. Citroen Xsara WRC
3. Subaru Impreza WRC
4. Mitsubishi Lancer WRC
5. Ford Focus RS WRC

Note: I am ranking these cars in their tarmac form - 18 inch wheels and scrapin' the ground.

Looks aren't everything and I was disappointed with the headlamp covers on the US WRX. The HID and rally lamps are much cooler. I love them because I think they are unique. As far as the coolest looking rally car, my vote goes for the 02 Subie.

Whats so interesting about the look of the Lancer? Sure it looks a little more aggressive than a Honda but I don't think its unique.

Mere speculation...

For starters the subaru emblem is the 6 stars of the constellation called "Subaru" in japan which represents the 6 companies that merged to form Fuji Heavy Industries. You're probably thinking of the Southern Cross which features on our flag.

Secondly, Subaru has been in Australia since the 60's and Aussies have been one of the bigger markets outside of Japan.
It seems our loyalty in the past is paying off now and into the future.
That'd be why we've had the Sti models for years now and you're still waiting. :p
:D

ps. i know i'm a cheeky Aussie. :)

I would like to know more about doing a fleet purchase.

Cheeky or not you are of course welcome! :)

HAHA

I personally like the way the regular WRX headlamps look. I think the STi ones look WAY better though, but when people put the morettes on their scoob it messes everything up. These are popular in UK and look horrible, really break up the lines of the "bug."

Yeah I think the 206 and the Citroen are some of the sexiest rally cars. I personally think they all look cool, mean, and tough!

I'll admit, I was a little put off by the look of the new Impreza when I first got mine. But it didn't take long for the look to grow on me. Now I adamantly feel that it is a good looking car. When I pull into a parking lot, get out of the car, and look at it, I can't keep the grin off my face. In an era of cookie-cutter, windtunnel jelly beans, it's nice to have something different. I get so sick of car magazines saying that they want something different, and in the same breath bashing on the Subaru because it DOES look different.

I'll grant you the headlights could be improved, but I'm guessing the overall design was based on projector beam or HID lights for the home market and the first gen US spec cars probably had their cheasy domes tacked on as an afterthought to get it past DOT.

Here's to hoping the STi corrects that problem. :)

i didnt know that about fuji heavy, thanx for the input. And as for the headlights, they are too much like a corolla hatch. I honestly don't care about looks though (as ironic as that sounds with me starting this topic), What i do care about is if i can see the guy driving his car who thinks he's fast and sees a fancy hood on the impreza. When you shift into first and reach second not seeing the guy in the next lane over, that is the golden beauty of the WRX/STI. I love sleepers.

I agree, that's why I think my wife and I have decided on the black-blue mica color. Its not as flashy. We are also gonna have the dealer debadge it at the dealership. I figure a lot of the stickers and emblems takes away from the sleeper looks, they break the lines up a little, and really they're gonna get stolen anyhow if left on. Example: Type-R badges and the Red Acura symbol!!!

I like the look of Stile's black STi debadged...very nice!

I believe Subie's reason with having Crocodile Dundee do their commercials is that...you can't go wrong with Crocodile Dundee, everybody loves him.

I think that the new WRX's look great :) Although the HID headlamps do look cooler, the bug-eye lamps on the WRX are pretty cool. When I first saw the WRX I thought that the body style looked a little too much like a regular sedan...but it has grown on me

I Like the new WRX looks. They always seem to catch my eye when they pass by. The morret headlights for the WRX look pretty good, but I think ill stay stock until something breaks on them. :)

Not to nit pick, but the five smaller stars represent the five smaller companies that merged to form the larger, sixth star, a company which later became known as Fuji Heavy Industries.

Hmm,
Interesting idea about the subaru emblem, but The constellation is also called Subaru, so I would imagine it may be a dual-purposed emblem. 1) the conglomerates forming Fuji Hvy Ind and 2) The actual constellation.

Straight from SOA's site.

“SUBARU” is a Japanese word meaning “unite,” as well as a term identifying a cluster of six stars, which the Greeks called the Pleiades – part of the Taurus constellation.

According to Greek mythology, Atlas’ daughters turned into this group of stars. In 1953, five Japanese companies merged to form Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. The new corporation adopted the “Subaru” cluster of stars as the official logo for it line of automobiles.

Did some more checking and it's still not quite right. There were actually seven sisters. But then one "veiled her face at the burning of Troy," the star is not very visible without the aid of telescopes.
