Lifespan and reliability of a built motor?

I had a COBB block with coated pistons and bearings. Lasted over 50K miles then started eating oil. There's a big thread over on nasioc about this same subject (built motors with significant mileage)

I'm about to drop a ralispec block in the car. That decision was the best for me at the time because it's an assembly that's already good to go. However if I was to go to a machine shop and specifiy what ever I wanted I would probably go with some 4032 pistons with tight (for a built motor) piston to wall clearances. I daily drive my car too. And it just doesn't see enough flat out ragged edge driving to need anything too crazy when all it does is sit in traffic.
