The new BFG Gforce Rival is a new extreme tire designed for Track and Autocross use but can be driven on the street as well. It has a UTQG of 200 which will allow the tire to compete in most street classes.

I was invited to NOLA Motorsports Park to do some testing against some top level extreme tires. It was a very good day. We started with some skid pad testing and then moved on to Auto X course and a Road course. Here are some of my key take aways please keep in mind this is dry testing only so I can not comment on wet performance or street comfort.

1. Turn in response - This for me was one of the sharpest handling tires I have ever driven. The tire gives instant steering reponse to inputs given.

2. Tons of Grip - This tire will compete with street tire in terms of dry grip. It stays very consistent. After driving on the same set of tires all day the tire were very consisent.

3. Wear - The tires held up very well vs the competitors. It's wear after many hard runs stayed very even.

The Rival will launch with 15 sizes from 15-20 inch rim diameters. I am now taking pre-orders with tires are expected to arrive between mid Feb-1st part of March.

Thanks to the BFG instructors and event planners for a first class event! Here are some pictures from the event.

I'd love to see/hear a direct comparison of those three. More details coming soon?

Let me start by saying the other tires are excellent products. Two of the very best out there right now. The new BFG is clearly faster. The new BFG had sharper response. From what I saw this will be the top tire in terms of dry performance. We will be doing more testing this spring at Tirerack to see how it performs in terms of wet handling and drivability on the street. I can say if you looking for Track days I would highly recommend these.

Do you feel that the difference in price for the Rival over the RS3 ($120 on Tire Rack) is justified by the performance of the tire? I saw the pictures and read the article, the RS3 in my opinion did really well.

I know that Tire Rack has been able to do some tests on these tires but I'm really interested to hear some feedback for 'real world' users. There are a couple of things working against the tire already. One is the need for additional sizes. Two, is the smaller market for EPS tires on daily driver vehicles. I know someone is going to do it, though. So I'm interested in what they have to say. I'm hopeful that I will be lucky enough to share similar driving habits (weekend warrior type). Also, I'm interested in how loud these are driving down the road at ~60mph (thanks SP600!) and what kind of mileage one can expect from this tire. I just feel like the jury is still out and it's way too early to put this tire ahead of the RE-11 and RS3.

Any thoughts?

It depends. If you are looking to win an Auto X or a competitive event then absolutely its worth the extra money. On a daily driver its to be determined. I honestly do not know how the new Rival's noise or ride comfort compares. Treadwear on a street car is to be determined but based on it's 200 UTQG rating it should be decent. For a daily driver I would wait until spring when we can test this tire on the street and in the wet. Of course I will continue to update this thread as I get more information. The RS3 is still a great tire and a great value and I am sure we will continue to see good sales on this tire.

As always there is not 1 tire that fits every customers needs. Its good to have choices and options.

Rudy, thank you for your reply. I'm really happy to hear you say that some folks may want to wait it out a bit until additional testing is done (for the daily driver market). I couldn't agree with you more in that regard. I'm really excited to see what you guys find out. I am definitely a tire nerd.. I spend too much time researching and buying them LOL

I look forward to hearing from you in the future!

Maybe I can revive an old thread here.

Looking for some streetable track tires (mainly autocross, maybe 1 or 2 tracks days, and DD). Is anyone running the G-Force Rivals on their 2015 STi? How do they do with the heat? Should expect them to only last one summer? If I want to do lots of track days should I get a track only tire and then a less aggressive dd tire?

thanks

The Rivals work well as a street tire you can take to the track. I have been really impressed with the way they wear under hard use and they handle heat fairly well. I suggest if your new to the track you start with a more streetable tire like this one. They typically communicate better and have a more progressive fall-off.
