JJ,
Well, if the STi tranny is that good then that is enough reason alone to wait!!!

BTW, I am sending in my deposit for my STi in today. I have worked out with an East Coast dealer to order the car...so if they get 3 cars allotted to them, but have 5 people with money down, then the dealer will get 8 total cars and the 5 do not count against the total US allotment! So, that means I am guaranteed to get one if I like the price..YAY!!!!

JJ, would you mind doing me a favor:
Please let me know what the dealer recommended service intervals are..I mean, 3K first oil change, then each addt oil change..but additionally let me know if there is anything else like sparkplugs or anything along those lines that need to be done.

Also, do you know if for your case/dealership if you don't go to the dealer will they void your warranty?

I don't understand that reasoning. So if Subaru only has 1000 STi for the US, but there are 2000 people with money down, Subaru will send another 1000 here? I highly doubt that. Not to mention if every dealer only gets 1 STi but some have 5 people with money down... what are they going to do, take them away from other dealers to give to the ones that have people with money down? Unless I am reading your message wrong, I don't think you will be guaranteed anything other than the dealer making interest on the money you gave them for something we still don't know for sure will be here.

MKIVSupra,
Well, from what I understand SOA will bring more in to the states based off supply and demand. I also think a lot of this depends on each dealer and their connections and pull within SOA. Also, not every one of those people who put money down will end up buying an STi, so I do think it is feasible that dealers will get more based on the pre-paid orders.

I only sent in $200 b/c I am not willing to pay more, b/c you are right...it is free interest on my money. However, I can guarantee you that the car will come to the states...100%! I'm not worried if, just when and how much.

I don't understand how or why a dealer would allow anyone to put money down on a car that "doesn't" exist for the U.S. market. I thought one could not put money down until SOA officially made a press release?

It's totally up to the dealer and his hench-men uhh, salesmen. He can take your money and if nothing comes he can just refund it to you and you go look for something else. For example the dealer I hope to get my STi from isn't making a list or taking money because it hasn't been "officially" announced by SOA. I was ready to give up some cash for a deposit but he wouldn't have it.

Well, and that's the thing. I have coordinated with a few dealerships (since I am living overseas and can't just "stop in"). One dealership is taking a deposit and the others are just putting me on a list. I don't like the list idea b/c to them a list a lot of times means NOTHING. They are business men..nothing more. I think most of them would sell their own mother!

I am just trying to work all angles of it, ya know? I have heard several people talk about "something that isn't 100% for sure coming." I know that SOA has not announced when or "if," but I am positive that the car will be here! 100% sure by many people, and the advent of the Evo coming over which has more problems (bumper, intercooler) issues than the STi. The only thing I do not know is price and WHEN, WHEN, WHEN. I am guessing around $30K and as early as this winter...probably next spring!

Service intervals should be every 3,000 for an oil change, with "intermediate" services (~200.00) at 15,000, 45,000, 75,000. Major services at 30,000, 60,000, 90,000 and 120,000.

The services for an STi might run more expensive, especially a brake job. :)

JJ,
Thanks. What does the 15K and 30K interval entail do you know?? Does any WRX owner know? I'm sure brake jobs will cost MUCHO money.

MKIVSupra, Yeah my plan was to run the oil then at 1K change it, use a semi-synthetic or full petrol oil in and then change and switch to full synthetic around the third oil change...so about what you said . ;)

Why are you "easing" in the blends of synthetic oil? Why not after 1k miles switch straight to pure synthetic oil?

Marine06,
Basically, there are claims saying that synthetic is too slick and that the new engine doesn't get a good break-in and wear. This was the same with my motorcycle. The bike ran smoother, but with full synthetic it was too slick for the first few thoudand miles for the engine to actually get a "natural" break-in and wear marks.

The 15k is really just an oil change with an inspection. Per the WRX service manual:

Replace - Engine oil
Replace - Engine oil filter
Inspect - Disc brake pads and discs, front and rear axle boots and axle shaft joint portions
Perform - Inspect brake lines and check operation of parking and service brake system
Inspect - Clutch operation
Inspect - Steering and suspension

The 30k is a little more involved:

Inspect - Drive belt(s) [Except camshaft]
Inspect - Camshaft drive belt
Replace - Engine oil
Replace - Engine oil filter
Perform - Replace engine coolant and inspect cooling system, hoses and connections
Recommended Performance - Replace fuel filter and inspect fuel system, hoses and connections
Replace - Air cleaner element
Replace - Spark plugs
Inspect - Transmission/Differential (Front & Rear) lubricants (Gear oil)
Inspect - Automatic transmission fluid
Replace - Brake fluid
Inspect - Disc brake pads and discs, front and rear axle boots and axle shaft joint portions
Inspect - Brake linings and drums
Perform - Inspect brake lines and check operation of parking and service brake system
Inspect - Clutch operation
Inspect - Steering and suspension

I'm coming up on my 30k and it looks like it'll be pricey. :(
