Is your rearview Shaking and falling off?

Subaru has a new set up for our mirrors. Mine was slowing getting looser and looser until it fell off. The screws were too short and stripped I guess to grab the threads of the baseplate. Anyway, the dealer fixed it with a new set up from Subaru.

Solid as a rock now.

Thanks for posting, here are my findings:

The new mirror baseplate mount adapter Part Number is H501SSA041. It's about $10 from the dealer, or you can probably have them replace it under warranty. I'd rather just pay the $10 and spend 5-minutes of my time than leave my car at the stealership for a few hours to replace the shit.

The screws were too short and stripped I guess to grab the threads of the baseplate.
I compared the old parts to the new. The screws are actually the same. The problem is the small threaded insert. The old one is slightly countersunk enough that the treads have trouble catching (and end up stripping if you've removed it before).

The new one is less countersunk and has more threads to catch onto. This "update" came 6/26/2013 according to the date on the parts bag.

Everything else about the mirror mount is the same. The only thing changed is the tiny little insert with the threads.

I used blue loctite on the new one as well and made sure not to over-torque the thing. This also got rid of my rear view mirror rattle which came from the factory.

Related topic: Rear View Mirror Resonance Rattle
I have a slight suspicion that the screws were over-torqued when installing the homelink mirror (ordered from the factory), because I've had a resonance vibration since the day I bought my car (which a few members have mentioned on this forum). I first alleviated this rattle when I put felt strips between the mirror and windshield. However, over time the mirror became loose and fell off altogether.

After putting the "new" baseplate on, the rattle is completely gone without my "felt strip" modification.

Here is the culprit:

Here is a closeup view so you can see the part that's "countersunk":

I don't have pictures of the new one as I already installed it, but it's just a lot countersunk than this one. If anyone happens to buy the new kit and has a chance to take pictures side-by-side for comparison, post em up!

Cliff Notes:
-New baseplate has more threads on the small insert
-Don't over-torque your shit
-Use some blue loctite on the screws
-Rattle is now gone
-Beer is awesome

OP, you might want to update the title to mention rattling/vibration as well, and that there's a solution in the thread

I had the same issue. Mine fell off after only 180 miles on it. Local dealer ordered a new one for me and I installed it and all was good. It seems to be an issue at the port when they install the mirror from what I hear. The small insert is a soft metal alloy which is not threaded until you tighten the screws. I assume they use power tools at the ports to put the added parts on and over-tightened it which caused it to fall off. If you over-tightened you risk stripping it which is the norm.
Very common problem. Dealers know and replace; or may not even let you finish the sentence when you call to schedule.

I've 1900 miles, and no issues though.
Conan, great info thanks! I dropped off the car, went for a bike ride and came back awhile later. With my luck I would have broken my window if I tried to install it myself. LOL
I just checked mine and it's solid as a rock. Maybe I got lucky when I installed it.
I have this problem as well but it's where the mirror pivots on the ball. I've tightened the piece you took a picture of but it's still shaking. I don't think there's a way to tight the mirror on the ball tho.
I had the same issue as well. I just tapped out larger screw holes on the base plate and replaced with better screws. It's not going anywhere now!
just bring it in and they'll replace it. I had mine done last week also. Took them 20 minutes.
Stock mirror or compass/homelink mirror?

I'm having issues with my homelink mirror coming loose.
Good to know there is finally a fix. I've had my mirror fall off once now, and it's beginning to shake again.

If anyone gets a picture of the new part be sure to post it.
Cliff Note's : Beer is awesome

Couldn't agree more.

It has nothing to do with the mirror, it's the base plate that is the issue. Just bring it in to the dealership and have them replace it for free.

Yes it does have to do with the mirror. The stock non homelink uses a different mounting base.
Yeah, mine has been in twice for this issue, but it seems to be loose at the pivot/ball vs. at the base. I'm going to call another dealership and see if they'll fix the mirror instead of re-tightening worn parts.

Have you tried holding the base while moving down the road? That usually stops the shaking for me. Which indicates that it is the base

Ditto on Homelink.

Thanks for the info on this thread. My dumbass dealer acted like a dumbass dealer when I inquired about it. I did a quick fix on it with a thin shim but will now do the right fix.
