Am I going to have to run all those tiny annoying wires from the head unit to the battery to the speakers to the trunk, etc. or is everything pre-wired and plug-n-play?

headunit and normal door speakers are plug-n-play. i don't think there's anything to the trunk.

Imagine taking out a stock sub-less system. That's what you've got. You'll need the aftermarket wiring harness for a head unit and if you want amps/subs...you'll need to run that wiring as usual.

the plug in the car connects you to constant and switched power, ground, and speakers wires. if you have a stock radio, this plug would fit on the radio. since we're doing aftermarket radios, you need a harness/adapter to allow the car's plug to connect to the radio's special connector. these aren't hard to get. i've seen 'em at best buy, circuit city, crutchfield, etc.

So what if you have an Alpine 9815/9813 with an internal amp? Do the wiring harnesses take into account the extra power needed? Normally you would wire directly to the battery but what if you use the wiring harness?

no,it doesn't come with anything but the wires.i got the complete oe stereo and it was all plug and play.the only wire i had to run was a 3 foot piece from the sub/amp to the head.it took me about 2 hours to install the whole thing.with only 4 basic tools.sounds great.and remember what 4MLA1FN said about the antenna,that was the only hard to get to wire.

hey everyone new here and just trying to absorb all this info..this is great..feel like im back in the early dsm days..heh..

i recently picked up my 04 sti..trying to get any and all info on the radio install..i have all info on speaker and fitment just wondering if you could clear up the antenna issue..

is there even a pre wired antenna? and a connection for an aftermarket radio? or do i need to buy an antenna as well?

I am taking it for granted that all speakers are pre-wired..the couple hundred posts ive read on this subject suggest the same..ive also found answers to my previous question about the antenna. just a alot of info to sift thru, but if you search long enough you will find an answer.so far this is the best wrx forum ive come across..thank god for you guys whoever started this up and thank everyone for sharing their input..

just wanna see if i got this right once and for all and for future newbies like myself..

ok if you go oem on all stereo stuff [head unit and speakers] then its all plug n play.
if you go aftermarket HU and get the correct harness then its still plug n play with the exception of soldering the aftermarket harness on to the hu harness. in this case then just plug in antenna connector to the hu and all other connections are taken care of i am assuming for antenna.

now if you dont get the aftermarket harness for quick connection to factory harness then this is where you would have to tap into that white wire in the corner of the stock harness to hu..

hoping i am correct so far..

speakers

front : 6.5 and 5.25 will fit with speaker connectors and spacers from innovative auto. for more details on specific speakers brands and models do a search on speaker fitment, plenty of info on this subject.

rear : 5.25 will fit. depending on which brand/model you get determines if youll be cutting the opening or not. still need spacers as above..i hope i am 100% correct on this cuz i dont plan on doing any cutting whatsoever. just got make sure i get speakers that arent to deep. i plan on going with polks since they claim that all will fit np. anyone familiar with polk brand? ive always heard of them and think they are good just never had them.
