I have been wondering about this for a while. We all know that ford makes the Cobra give people a certain image about ford and get the people in to buy a V6 mustang. Do you think Subaru is doing the same thing here with the STi? The SOA STi is made in such low volume that I dont think it could possibly be making subaru much money....at least not enough to invest so much company resources into the design and development of it. It is a good strategy though....I personally never thought about subaru as a car company I would want to deal with until the WRX came out and blew everyone away.

Re: Nuts!

Sure...why not? It's called the "halo effect". We've discussed this in some other threads before.

Add to the fact that in the upcoming model years Subaru will be adding performance (turbo'd) versions of all their vehicles, with the Baja and the Forester XT out next year, and probably a Legacy STi. They made a name for themselves with affordable AWD, and now their taking it to the next level: PERFORMANCE AWD. I wouldn't be surprised to see ads that say, "from the company that brought you the STi, comes a new line of performance AWD vehicles..."

Bummer

Subaru is trying hard to change their image from the "weird little quirky cars" to more of "fun vehicles for people who want to be different". If the slogan wasn't already taken, Subaru should use - "This isn't your grandfathers Subaru".

Basically the STi is all about changing perceptions of the make - when I mention that I currently drive a sports car made by Subaru, people sort of chuckle to themselves. Then I say its a WRX and the go "Oh ya, the WRX". I think the WRX is made to bring a sporty car to the masses, but the STi is purely to turn the car culture on its ear and make it a serious contender for the "biggest bang for the buck" award.
