Alright, I know we kinda discussed this before, but I've just noticed something pretty weird.

For circumstances that I won't complain about, I haven't been making the insurance payments for my Celica GTS. When I graduate here in May, I'll be taking those payments over....no big deal.

I went to progressive to get an idea of how bad they'll beat us up on the STi. I quoted out an 04 WRX. Quote came back at $649 every 6. So for the STi we'll probably be north of $700 every 6.

Just for the hell of it I then put in what I would be paying for the Celica....hoping to get some idea of how much my payments would go up. A GTS that is 4 years older than a brand new TURBO WRX costs $50 more per 6.

How the hell does that work? Does the 4-door thing really make that much of a difference? I figured the whole turbo thing would offset that.

Insurance these days depends on a very large number of factors. Location, average driving distance, parts costs, safety of car, driver, where the car is parked, etc. The main things these days seem to be theft rates, cost of repair, car safety (accident testing results, air bags, ABS, etc.), and sometimes credit worthiness of the insured. It is almost too difficult to make reasonable guesses because of all the different issues. I know someone who moved apartment complexes 1/2 a mile. Because the new complex was in a different zip code and the accident and theft rate was higher in that zip code their cost went up 20%. What a crock.

If you live in one of the following states:
AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, DC, GA, IL, IN, KS, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NE, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA.
you can get a qoute from Costco.

They don't have the STi yet but you can specify Other and it asks for the total purchase price. I was looking at 1 to 1.5k for 6 months, about what I was expecting.

Costco is pretty cool.

Factoid: Insurance on a 328ic is more expensive than on an M3! Sounds funny, but the reason is that M3s have lower claim rates in general. So, it doesn't always have to be so cut and dry, as was mentioned above. If over the first few years, there is a lower claim rate on the STi, the insurance could be cheaper than on a regular WRX!

You've got to be kidding me???? Man, how old are you? I'm not yet 25, but my rates for an 04 WRX was only 650 every half. How can the price be 2 or 3 times that only based on $7k more in cost? No way.....

The joys of accident free and 35 y/o married: State Farm estimates under $400/6 months for an STi. $100 deductible comprehensive, $500 for collision, includes uninsured motorist coverage. I'm sure living in Idaho helps. We pay under $300/6mo for the Miata now.

Insurance quotes will be different from company to company. They do not all look at things the same. I got quotes where my 98 Legacy GT was more than my 94 Supra TT. Then I would get a quote from a different company and it was the opposite. Also getting a quote is a lot different than actually starting the policy. I got a quote one time where by the time I was ready to sign up, the amount nearly doubled and it took them 8 quotes to get there. Every time I would talk to them you they sent me something in the mail, the amount was a little more. I told them to shove it even though it would have been cheaper then what I currently had.

I doubt it. They would say some BS about after running my record or VINs changed things. Also the last 3 times I talked to them I kept telling them the coverages stated on what they mailed me were half what I originally said I wanted and was quoted for on the phone. They would then mail me a new statement and the coverages were still half but the premium was a little more. It was just a big run around. Maybe they did not think I would notice or hoped I would just say F it and go with them anyway.

Seems to me that this topic should be called "Insurance - Cons...in both senses of the word" since I don't see anyone mention any pros about it

Well I will certainly agree that there are many downsides to indurance. Mainly cost. But I will say there are a few things that insurance provides that you just can't get elsewhere. Example (without going into all the details): My GF got hit in a parking lot. Someone backed out of a space and hit her car on the right front side, right on the pass. wheel and fender. The other party admitted that she did't look before pulling out. This happened in their apartment complex. Well, what a fiasco. The other party avoided contact, refused to call her insurance co., refused to answer phone calls, etc. Turns out she wasn't even supposed to be driving that vehicle (her Dad's) and didn't tell her insurance company she had moved 6 months previous. After two weeks that person's insurance finally said they would pay half since it was on private propperty and no one was ticketed. What a crock! After three weeks with no car my GF was mighty pissed at this debacle. She decided to just go through her own insurnace and get it a rental car and get it resolved. Insurance does provide you an altrernative to hiring lawyers and fighting it out in court to get what is fair. Unfortunately, our society has caused people to start living their lives based on legal culpability and not fairness and right and wrong.

Wow man...that's extreme. I'm 23, no accidents, tickets here and there in an 00 Celica GTS and I'm only quoted at 700 per half at progressive. For an 04 WRX from the same place I was quoted at 650 per half. Go figure.....

I guess I'd start there!
