I'm currently 6th on the waiting list for an STi at the largest Subaru dealer in the Phoenix area. I'm just now learning that this dealer isn't ordering cars for the people on their waiting list at all. They're just taking what they get, then dialing up the people on the list starting with #1 and working their way down till they find someone who'll take that color/option combo.

What do I need to do to get these guys to order me the car I want? That being, a blue/gold STi with *zero* options (especially not the damned auto dimming mirror they're ordering on all of them for $400). They seemed convinced (or are trying hard to convince me) that they have no say in what STi's they receive or what options they come with. They also can't seem to tell me *anything* regarding a time frame for when I can expect to get the car.

Is there an SOA rep I can talk to? Someone above their heads? Would asking to speak to the owner help? I don't want to be sitting here thinking about whether or not I should take the silver/silver they have now, or wait and hope they get another blue/gold. I also don't want to pay an extra $500 bucks for an option package I don't want.

There are other cars/dealers in town with offers that I'm starting to consider, simply because my dealer isn't keeping me informed, and seemingly isn't even trying to get me the car I want. It's almost like they don't want me on their "MSRP" list, so they can take my spot and sell it to someone else at a higher price.

Life's too short to get jerked around.

Find a dealer that WILL order the car YOU want and tell these bozos to piss off.

I did it and couldn't be happier! I am secure in the knowledge that I will be getting the car I want in 2 months.

The dealer can order your Sti the way you want.... I have only added the upgraded security system to all the cars , with the owners approval.... I am a dealer, We can order the cars exactly as we want.... I have heard of dealers in my area adding shift knobs, radios , etc, and marking the car up $8k.
I have been selling all ordered units at msrp, but will be marking up the retail units about $3k.. I really think that $3k is a fair number. I know all the buyers out there will not agree to want to pay anything over window, but consider that they have been getting $10k over for the EVO, and that thing as we know does not even match up to the STi.
Congrats to all of you that have your STi, enjoy the FUN!!!!!!

Well, I think the dealer have the right to jack up the price to as high as they want... it's MRSP after all.

However, I will never pay above MRSP, it's simple economics, some people are willing to pay more than MRSP for the car and they can indeed afford to. The person who's willing to pay more get's what he wanted.

For me, I had rather capture the consumer surplus myself

I also feel funny about some of those dealers and the attitude that they have. Just like some Honda dealers when they got their S2000. They think they are selling Ferrari's all of a sudden. But then again, they are just sales persons. There are reasons why they are selling cars instead of being CEO of IBM.

That's life, and don't complain. If they can't sell it at a marked up price, they will sell the car at MRSP or even below... and if the car really sucked, no demand for it what so ever... They could be had for below invoice even. Of course not the case with STi...

On the other hand. The Subaru of Canada have an high MRSP... Subaru of Canada itself marked up the price of the car. I have no doubt that they can sell a ton of STi here. But not to me. Not without my HID at least (not really leagl to put on aftermarket HID in Toronto)

Props for them for at least bring the car into Canada though...

TalonTSiAWD,

I assume your talking about the same place I got my car. They just don't seem to be able or willing to pre-order cars. I talked to the sales manager about this and he said he doesn't have the option of pre-ordering. I then came up with my theory that they decided to take whatever Subaru would give them to get 4-5 cars a month.

Seeing as you are 6th on the list and they have sold 4 cars already you should be pretty much next on any car that comes in. Of course I was 7th on the list and went for the white/silver car. I really wanted white/gold but I really like the white/silver now.

I'd just wait till the next months alotment and see what happens. Of course you'll probably have to go with the popular equipment group since they all seem to come with that. If you don't like those options then I recommend going with Murley. He is very helpful.

Good luck.

Thanks to everyone for all of the feedback.

The dealer will not budge about ordering a car. Apparently you'll take what they get and you'll like it!

Due to real life concerns I'll probably be passing on the STi for this year anyways. I may be back at the dealer next year when the feeding frenzy has died down some what. I've waited this long, a bit more wont kill me.

if you don't want to wait, and you're willing to do the legwork i'm sure you can find a car. you may have to go a ways to get it though. definitely don't get screwed by a bad dealer though.

also the auto dimming mirror is a pretty good option. i had one on my wrx (which i didn't really want) and i got one on my sti because i liked it so much. $400 is too much to pay for it though.

STi on motorweek this Sunday. Link.

It's like $415 for the auto dimming mirror and security system package. I think the security package is why it's too much. It souldn't be $400 for just the mirror. You are right sakura-iro.
