I want a car that is fun & relatively cheap to mod. I currently drive a BMW & everything is soo expensive. A good body kit is at least $2500 unpainted & not installed, and that is just a 4 piece kit. Descent wheels at least $3500 for 19" (not with the tires), intake starting at $250 for a name brand one. And then the performance mods are rediculous $$.

I dont think the STI will be as cheap as maybe Honda mods, but how much does it cost to mod a STI? or a 350Z/G35?

RS WRC

you read my mind. :D

If I'm really gonna do serieus modding and stuff I might as well get the cheaper 2.5RS or WRX and use that difference of price to mod the engine or swap the body kit.

But I plan to focus more on driving techniques first, then deal with the car configuration or modding later on (big fan of Initial D) as STi is already well sport tuned enough.

these are just my personal thoughts, as there is nothing wrong about modding STi.

Peace

delirium, the reason there are cars like M3 or Sti is that you dont need to mod your car anymore...It's already been done for you!
Performance wise, I dont think they need much, maybe just exhaust & intake. But most of the mods I would want to do to either of these cars would be some suspension & asthetics.

I guess it depends on how look at it. For many modding means individualization rather than outright performance, and extra performance is part of modding for individulization. :D

...it's just that an STi is a much better platform for doing it with the stronger internals, drive train etc...

Delirium, your question is very vague...what do you consider expensive? How much modding are you planning on doing? And to be honest, you won't need to do much. Are you talking about the price modding an STi compared to a similar mod on say, a Civic? If you're talking price/performance ratio, I've found that Vishnu seems to have pretty good prices for the performance you get. There isn't any STi mods yet and I'd advise that it'd probably be best to leave the car alone except maybe for minor mods like intake and exhaust until your warranty runs out. By then, there will be alot more STi-specific aftermarket parts to choose from. In the meantime, I guess you'll just have to make do with that measely 300 hp

One expense that people don't seem to talk much about is GAS. I'm hesitant to do any mods that are detrimental to fuel economy.

Car covers for STI

There's a stack of STi related mods here in Australia. People like MRT and APS have been modding STi's since we've had them which I think is around the early to mid 90's. In any case a lot of the aftermarket performance kits availble in the US have been developed and tested here already, the ESX kits use APS kits in some of their power upgrades.

Check here for US distributors:
http://www.airpowersystems.com.au/wrx/aps-usa/us_distributors.htm

As for fuel economy, we've found here locally that a kit from someone like APS has shown equal if not better fuel economy than stock and that's with a substantial increase in power at the wheels over stock!

I will wait probably at least a year before doing anything drastic to the car. I much prefer to get used to it stock before trying to make it even more ridiculous...

or at least, thats what I'm telling myself right now, :D

im talking about body kit & wheels, along with some basic bolt on performance mods.

I found out the front lip for M3 is actually $2000. That is rediculous, I wonder how much the whole body kit costs.

That is waht I mean, Im sure you can buy a descent 5 piece kit for a honda for $2000. so where does a wrx STI stand on the spectrum?
