Yes it is completely open. But it should not collect too much stuff on the intercooler since it is not mounted vertically. It is more flat(not completly flat) so stones and bugs etc. should not be able to fly directly into it to damage, but if they do it will be more of a falling on to it probably after deflecting off the back of the scoop.

Guy from a different site said he did have a piece of bark or something damage a fin-have no idea if this is even possible. This is way over my head. Said he had developed some screen mesh to cover the intercooler and then didn't worry about the opening. Guess I'll talk to the dealer when the car comes in.

When I first bought my wife's WRX, I was worried about rocks denting the fins on the intercooler. I went to home depot, found a roll of wire mesh (the smallest hole size I could find), then cut two pieces to overlap holes (reducing each hole into quarters). Cut the mesh so it is just as tall as the intercooler, but cut it wide enough to have an extra inch on either side. I was able to place it on the intercooler, and crimp the sides so it held itself on, and I didn't have to drill any holes.

I think I spent less than $10 on mesh, and have plenty left over for my STi.

PS We looked at a used WRX with 4000 mi on it at the same time we got hers, and it had at least 10 fins bent from rocks and road debris. Those fins are very delicate.

Came across a site while looking for products for the car. Keep in mind they are selling stuff. They have covers for the cooler and for the intake they do have screens. Their "position" is to go with a screen in the intake to stop the debrit from coming in because the screen over the intercooler fins changes the air flow. It was fastlineonline.com.

So what are people doing for IC protection? After seeing the pic of the STi engine in a WRX I noticed a few bent fins, I thought of this. This is something I would like to have before I get my STi so I can put it on right away. You just going to make one yourselves or do you know of one pre-made. fastline.com only shows stuff for the old style scoops not the new ones.

Things I would like to have BEFORE I get my STi...
1)floormats
2)IC protector
3)Appointment for stoneguard install
4)Some cool mud flap type things I saw on a pic of an STi once(don't know where I will get these)

Stone guard is a clear protective film applied to the front of the car, nothing to do with the hood scoop. Also the stuff they list is for the old style scoop, not sure if it will work with the new ones. I am going to email them and see if they have anything for the 04STi.

by "old style" do you mean wrx or "old style sti"? they do show a screen for the bigger sti scoop. it doesn't say my04, but i don't recall the older STi's having such a pronounced scoop. shrug. let us know what they say. next to mats, this will be an early mod.

Yeah but I think that is still the old style STi scoop. With the new ones, the upper lip kind of protrudes over the rest. The older ones, WRX and STi, I think are staight up and down... if you know what I mean. Not sure if anything else is different, like the overall size in general such as a lager diameter openeing. Maybe it doesn't matter, I will shoot them an email and see what they say.
