Background:

I'm new to STIs, but not new to Subaru. My previous car was a 2005 San Remo Red WRX Wagon with a fairly long mod list. The WRX Wagon was totaled in an accident in early December 2008. .

After the WRX Wagon was totaled, I started searching for a new car. I found out about the $7000 OFF AND 63 month 0% financing deal Subaru was offering on the 2008 STIs, so I headed a mile up the road to Stohlman Subaru in Vienna, VA to see what they had in stock. The next day I had a 2008 Spark Silver Metallic STI!

Day One:

Here are pics of the car about 1 hour after I took it home. The dealer badge was the first thing to come off.

Welcome! I would suggest getting the clear bra. The paint seems to be really fragile! Wish I would have done it off the bat!

Winter Wheels and Tires

I bought the STI in December 2008 and snow/ice storms were fast approaching. I did NOT want to even attempt to run the sock Dunlops in even light snow let alone ice.

After reading through all the posts in the "2008 STI Winter Wheel and Tire" thread, I decided I wanted to get a set of 05-07 STI BBS wheels. I searched for a few days and came across a mint set of gold 05 BBS in Richmond, VA (110 miles away) that were MINT and CHEAP. I told my fiance I'd be driving to Richmond to get them and she said she wanted to come along for the road trip. I didn't mind driving to get them because it was an excuse to get through a good chunk of 1000 mile break-in

Before the trip I ordered a set of 225/50/17 Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3s from tire rack. They were delivered the day before I made the trip to pick up the wheels.

At any rate, I picked up the wheels and they were in fact MINT. When I got home later that I had them mounted and balanaced at a local tire shop. I was happy that I could fit 4 wheels (in boxes) AND 4 tires in the back of the STI with the seats down.

When I got home from the tire shop, I mounted the wheels on the car and here are the results:

The weight difference of the stock 5 spokes (~27 lbs) vs the 05 BBS (~17 lbs) was immediately noticable. So now I'd have to get a set of lighter wheels for summer :D

Track Decals

I ordered some track outline decals of the tracks I've driven on ... Nurburgring and Summit Point Shenandoah Circuit. They are about 2" tall and are silver.

Go Hokies! Hopefully they will have a better showing in the Orange Bowl than last year. Are you still in the Blacksburg area or in NOVA now?

Re: hokie_sti's 2008 Spark Silver STI Journal

The car was finally broken in a few days ago 12/25/08...

I had the WVE15 reflash done around ~600 miles as well as an oil change. I didn't realize the dealer hadn't done this prior to me buying the car. I was disappointed by this. I hadn't gone over 4K yet, so hopefully no damage was done in that period. I'm hoping the few miles that were on the car when I picked it up were "gentle" miles.

Now that break-in is complete, I've been playing around with S and S# modes. The power is much improved over my WRX Wagon, but the handling is a little "mushy". I'm going to order 22mm F/R whiteline sways in January 2009 so that should help out with the body roll. I'll get a set of JDM sti pink springs eventually to firm up the ride even further as well as a performance alignment.

Thanks! The WRX Wagon had a TON of rock chips in the hood so I know how that can be. I'm not too worried about the hood, but I am worried about the rear doors that seems to be prone to rock chips on the 08s.

I hope so too! I'm in northern VA now ... graduated in 2004.

Very nice, enjoy it
Thanks! I plan on it :D. Can't wait to order/install the sway bars!

Re: hokie_sti's 2008 Spark Silver STI Journal

I placed an order at TIC last night for a 22mm adjustable Whiteline rear sway bar. I hope it comes this coming week or next so I can install it! :D

I plan on ordering the 22mm adjustable Whiteline front sway bar in a month or so. In the meantime I plan on running the rear sway bar on the 20mm setting. Once I have both Whiteline bars installed I plan on running on the 22mm setting front and rear.

Whiteline 22mm adjustable rear sway bar (BSR49XZ) w/ braces (KBR15)

I got the Whiteline 22mm adjustable rear sway bar in the mail yesterday.

Here is is laid out on the floor:

When I got home to work, I immediately went to work installing it. Installing the bar itself took about 15 mins. Installing the right brace took about 5 minutes. Attempting to install the left brace took over 2 hours and then I gave up. The lower control arm pivot bolt would NOT loosen. PB Blaster, breaker bar, and a jack didn't even make it budge. Luckily Mach V, a local shop, was able to squeeze me in this afternoon to install the left brace. Air tools and a lift made short work of that bolt and the remaining part of the install took about 5 minutes

Clean sway bar under a dirty car :

Driving impressions:

What a great mod! I have the bar on the middle (22mm) setting and the car corners MUCH flatter. I plan on ordering the Whiteline 22mm FRONT adjustable sway bar in a month or so to complement the rear bar.

I had 22mm front and rear whiteline sway bars on my 2005 WRX wagon, so I know what a hudge difference they can make. Eventually I'd like to upgrade the springs. I'm leaning towards the JDM Pinks for a minimal drop and increased rates.

Thanks to Turn In Concepts for shipping the sway bar so quickly and thanks to Mach V for finishing off the install and breaking that bolt loose!

hokie_sti's 2008 Spark Silver STI - Sparco hotness coming soon!

I decided to install my Sparco Torino II seat into the STI. I ordered the new 08+ Impreza seat base today and I should have it in by this weekend!

Background of my Sparco Torino II seat:

In 2004, I scored a pair of brand new Sparco Torino IIs with sliders on ebay for $700 shipped. Pretty great deal considering they seats cost $600 new each. At the time I had a 1995 Audi 90 (owned that car for 7 years) and had Piper Motorsports in Manassass VA build a set of custom seat bases.

In 2005 I bought a 2005 WRX Wagon. I got a set of sparco seat bases from Rally Sport Direct and installed them prompty. I fabbed up a set of seat risers (seen here) for them. I sold the passenger Sparco seat in 2007 and kept the driver's side. The WRX Wagon was totaled in December 2008.

Since then my Sparco Torino has been sitting in my living room tempting me to install it in the STI. I was on the fence about installing it because it's the gray/black version and wouldn't really match the rest of the interior. It's still in great shape. No fading, rips, or tears. It's really comfortable and a huge improvement over the stock seat for autocross, track days, and spirited driving. So it'll be going in the car this weekend after I pick up the new seat base for 08+ Imprezas.

Eventually I would like to replace the Torino with a Sparco Chrono Road or Sparco Milano 2. But for now I can live with just buying a new base and using the seat I already have.

Big thanks to GTSolutions (a member here) for giving me an awesome deal on the seat base!

I'll post pics once it's installed.

Assuming UPS actually delivers, tonight I will do battle with my car and a new Whiteline 22mm adjustable front sway bar!

Do me a favor. Run the car hard around a few tight corner before and after the FSB and give you impressions of more or less understeer. Just curious if the GR even need the front bar. I'd be tempted to sent the FSB back and put JDM springs or coils on with the stock FSB and aftermarket rear. They just have so much rear bite.
