Hatch: COBB v Perrin CBE ?

9879 Views 19 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Wugak
Hey guy I have a 2013 STI Hatchback. I am looking to get a cat back in the next week.

From the sound clips I have been hearing I really like the Cobb CBE. Sounds really refined, which is what I am looking for. However the Perrin CBE sounds nice too (or at least in a few youtube videos).

Does anyone have any advice?

Or does anyone want to talk me out of a Cobb CBE?

I really appreciate it in advanced. I tried searching for previous threads on this but could not find anything on comparing the 2 brands.

The Cobb is too quiet to me. The Perrin and Q300 are pretty much on par.

I've personally been leaning towards the Q300 for a while now, but mainly for the titanium tips. I'm impartial to Perrin products and the Perrin Black CBE is pretty for a murdered look.
I have the Cobb TBE and love it. My 44 year old ears wanted no part of any kind of drone whatsoever. I went through that with my LGT and was quite concerned about it with a hatch. You (and others nearby) will definitely notice that the sound isn't stock but it isn't obnoxious like some exhausts which scream "hey, look at me officer, please pull me over and ask if the exhaust is stock or if my tint is illegal!"

Short version. You'll enjoy the sound but won't ever be embarrassed by it or fed up with it at highway speeds. Check out RSD's website for their video clip. It was very helpful for me

I do like the black one. Does anyone on here have sound clips of just a Perrin CBE?

Hey I searched the site and can't find any video clips?
It looks like they took the video down. Sorry about that. U might email them and see if they could give you a link to it or something

the q300 drones in hatchbacks from what i noticed in my buddy's car. in the low 2K RPM's it's booming drone.

Yeah I have been reading that all over. Any input on COBB vs Perrin CBE only?
I ended up buying the Perrin because it's a full 3", I believe the cob tapers down to 2.5 at the downpipe flange.
Doesn't drone at highway speeds.. I have KillerB ELH and a Perrin catted DP.
So I have a couple videos that I recorded for a potential buyer of my 08 STI. It has the Perrin exhaust that you are interested in. I have extra mods done but hopefully you get the idea of what it sounds like. (he ended up buying it)

Cold start on 08 STI with Perrin err thing.
Cold Start - 2008 Subaru STI - YouTube
Short run to hear sound.
2008 Subaru STI - Pull (for sound only) - YouTube

Again, these videos were recorded for sound only so sorry if you get sick watching them.
I actually didn't know that about the low rpm droning.

Cobb and Perrin are pretty much the same in rumble/sound from what I can tell, except for the sound level which is higher on the Perrin.

Edit,

Here's the video that used to be on the RSD site from Cobb:

This is the video that turned me onto the COBB.. there is also this one COBB Tuning Catback Exhaust - YouTube

I wish there was something like that for the Perrin.

Sounds awesome but I wish you out some dead stop vids, or fly bys.
Here's a video we did a long time ago of the 08 STI hatch with our catback.

Do the new quad tips sound anything like this? Does not seem that way from other vids I have heard.
The quad tip is going to be the same, unfortunately this video is pretty old, so video quality could have made it sound different. The last time I drove a car with just the quad tip catback, it was surprisingly mellow when at light throttle.

I would go with Perrin. I got so many compliments (in Vegas) on the sound. I ran out of mods to do to it so I sound matted from the back sets back and you could not even hear the exhaust. It sounded great. This was back in 2008 so Perrin would have sales and deals for holidays. They must be too good to do that kind of stuff now. I got my exhaust 40% off for a one day sale. I was extremely happy with the quality of all the products I got from them. (I had everything Perrin made for an STI) Maybe you can ask them for a discount for being an ISSTI member and posting a video of the sound of your new exhaust.
Very little drone in my 11 hatch with Perrin, totally fine on long road trips. I have the Perrin El headers also though which reduce the overall noise it seems.

Sorry friend, I know you are looking for specific input, but you will get 100 different opinions on this so you will have to do the research. I suggest you find someone local and take a ride in their cars(s).

My $0.02 is that I BEG you to take a listen to the Nameless system, both on here and on youtube. I have a 2012 hatch with TBE 5" mufflers and resonator and I LOVE it. Nice tone, no drone etc. Nice deep rumble and it doesn't spit and bark like some systems.

Good luck with your decision!
