Afternoon flat4 lovers, this is my first post on this community and I have done as much research as I can. Seems I have hit a wall and need to just shotgun my questions out here.
I am currently planning to go tune my 2018 STI. It has a CAI COBB stage 1 OTS tune which I recently installed paired with a axelback that I’m unsure of the brand(probably remark).
it seems that the new COBB greenspeed update has caused some serious heartache in the tuning community. I believe BRENtuning and some other tuners will not even touch “stage 2” EJ’s as the downpipes are sending them into limp mode with CEL(check engine lights) P0420.
I hear that you can put o2 spacers or defoulers into the downpipe to possibly remedy this CEL, or once it pops up just simply delete the code until it comes back on. But it might only be a temporary fix and at any moment the CEL will resurface, possibly permanently.
it seems that the grimspeed GESI v2 has had the greatest success in my research via YouTube/Reddit users/tuners with not throwing CEL.Cobb seems to be less successful but a better shape(bellmouth).
Each tuner I have spoken with has warned me that putting in a downpipe means more often than not my STI will throw that code and not much can be done about it. The manufacturers of these downpipes have pulled it from there websites as well.
My goal was to make 290-310 whp and 320-330wtq. I plan on doing the typical AEM 340, COBB FPR, GS EBCS, dom4 cool mod, one step colder NGK plugs. And get a quality catted GESI downpipe to tune it altogether.
I would be cool if I popped a CEL once every few weeks that require a soft delete, but I don’t want one popping up every 45 miles or when I am in the middle of my track days which would mess with my times.
After speaking with the tuners which this sub typically recommends, they seem that power would be close with all those mods minus a downpipe, and that would limit the headache.
I was fairly set on going with a downpipe for the obvious performance benefits, but recently I’m starting to think it might be a waste of money and make the car run worse for 15-25whp.
Has anyone recently installed and E- tuned a GESI downpipe and have it work properly, is it just a random luck of the draw if doesn’t pop that these tuners are telling me (5% chance the CEL will stay off) any feedback and guidance would be greatly appreciated!!!!
