1st and 2nd have carbon synchros. That's the difference you're feeling. Reverse is a different thing altogether. Not sure about the 2015's but my 2013 WRX doesn't have a synchro on the reverse gear (which totally sucks).

Most manuals do not have a reverse synchro.

If you have trouble getting into reverse, try shifting to fourth then to reverse. If that doesn't work, shift to neutral, clutch out, clutch in, then do reverse again.

 

Thanks, I can shift in reverse. It's just not shifting in smooth like other gears.

 

I've found it easier to get into reverse by rowing through 1st, 2nd, then reverse. At least, that's what helped in my '06 WRX. I'll verify later when I pick up mine :banana::banana:

 

Yup. I shift into 1st, then to neutral, clutch out, clutch in, and into reverse. Works every time.

 

I was reading the manual last night and it says that it is fully synchronized from 1st to reverse, so I'm guessing reverse has a synchro too. Makes sense as it has gone in every time with zero difficulty since I've gotten it.

 

The gearbox is essentially the same as previous years, but new for 2015 it has triple-cone carbon synchros for gears 1 & 2, double cone for 3, and single cone for 4-6. It is also fully synchronized for reverse as well, and has been for at least the past 4 years (2011-2014).

I have the Subaru Short Shifter kit, and I have don't have a click per say but when you pull into 2nd for example, there is a small resistance halfway through the shift were it would not be in neutral or in gear, and you have to pull through that to get it actually into gear. I would say it's normal.

The 6 speed in the STi probably has, but the 5 speed in my '13 WRX was definitely not synchronized for the reverse gear.

 

No issues going into any gear in mine. My 2010 hung going into 2nd all the time, but this car shifts smooth as buttah.

Does the 6 speed in the WRX receive the carbon synchros?

 

If you get a weighted shift knob the gear changes will be much smoother. I highly recommend a heavier knob than stock.
