O.k. I just wanna know if anyone else here can't stand the Holland Tunnel hood scoop. I really can't get over the fact that i hate it. It just makes the car look goofy to me. I plan on getting a front mount intercooler and vented hood with my first batch of performance upgrades. Does it annoy any of you this much? Thanks for the input :D

I am not a big fan of it either. It's probably my least favorite part of the car, but I will live with it (at least for a while)

Heh, I hear ya! I even started the thread about switching the thing out months ago. I don't mind it being to wide, or high, or even the fact that it looks like a bass-mouth. I simply don't like the way it comes out further at the top. The profile makes it look very amateur. (I have since come to realize that the design serves a purpose, so don't jump down my throat.) I guess I will just have to live with the fact that most people will be viewing my STI from behind....

I'm sure the aftermarket is just waiting to get the dimensions to throw out new ones.

As far as going all the way to a front mount....nope, no way. Not until I absolutely need to. We've talked about that before.

Something else to think about though guys.....if they come out with a hood like the WRC car with the front mount IC (which won't work with a regular FMIC), it will make the scoop look pretty badass.

Hey Bhodges,

I don't suppose you could tell me where you got that awesome animated gif you used for your avatar at? I have scoured the internet for a dancing white mage to go with your black mage but couldn't find one anywhere. I did find a ton of non-animated white mage gifs though. Peace!!

I've got a question about front mount intercoolers... How are they better (or not) than the top mount variety? I figure the first bennifit has to be the lack of huge hood scoop (although I've grown to like it). Also, I guess you can force air through easier (or is that any different considering the enormus volume of the STi's scoop should be able to direct a healthy quantity of air at similar pressures). On the other hand, a top mount IC keeps the total volume of air between the turbo and intake manifold to a minimum, which makes it easier to build and keep pressure higher (both desireable bennifits of turbo's, I would think). Other than the sight of the scoop (which again, I kind of like), I don't see the motivation to change.

We've been through this before. An FMIC will suffer in turbo lag due to the extra length of pipe to get the air to the turbo. Unless you're pushing high hp's, it's not really worth it.

It's just simple ignorance for the most part that people automatically think a front mount is best. Honestly, I think most people go for FMICs because they 'look cool'.

Like you said, you really don't want to use a FM unless you need it due to the head losses involved in the plumbing. One thing against a TM is heat soak, but that is really only a problem when you are sitting for a period of time and need max performance right away then. For instance, with an autox run, you'd want to open the hood and turn the car off in between runs to keep the heat off the IC.

I'd really only consider a FM if I needed that extra cooling that I couldn't get from a TM. Read this writeup at SPD Tuning.

O.K. i don't think that was directed at me but just in case it was let me say this. I am not putting a FMIC in my STI cause i think it will help me "live my life a quarter mile at a time". I don't expect any power upgrade from doing it by itself. I am doing it because the stock hood scoop is ridiculous. I just hate it that much. I want it gone when i start tuning the car. That simple. I plan on doing other power upgrades at the same time so the FMIC probably will help me anyways though. Also a gorgeous FMIC with a pink STI logo on it will look alot better than the aiplane intake opening on the hood. Peace!!

That certainly wasn't pointed at you. Didn't mean to do so.

It's one thing to not like the scoop, but go looking for a new scoop before you kill your performance with a FM. All that extra piping, with all other things unchanged, you'll lose power because you don't like the scoop.

Just wait for the aftermarket. I'm SURE someone will make a more subtle looking one.
