Does anyone know if the alarm system from the factory is considered a passive or active system? You will know if its an active alarm if you get a nice discount from your insurance company Under ANTI-THEFT. I checked subarus website, the owners manual, and the forums and I cant find this info.

Should be active. Passive alarms automatically activate, which doesn't happen with the STI. Active alarms need you to arm it yourself, which you do when you press the lock button on your remote (or touch the handle with your hand if you have keyless access).

EDIT: Actually, the STI is likely both. Active for the actual alarm and passive due to the immobilizer (since that works no matter what you do).

Well according to the insurance companies a passive alarm system is basically an immobilzer and the alarm goes off if I physically open a door or the hood or trunk. An active system is when you smash a window, or the car is moved or hit in any way it will go off. Basically active has some kind of motion detection. So I wanted to know based on that what the sti comes standard with or If I have the ability to get the active system from the factory. When I ordered my mustang that extra $600 I spent for the active anti theft ended up saving me almost $250 a year for insurance. I would like to do the same with the sti if i can.

it is both. if you purchase the Shock Sensor then it becomes active. if you do not it is passive until you do purchase it. The dealership has to activate it with a special software they have.

FYI I told my insurance agent that mine was active. I got the discount.

Did you have the shock sensor installed from the factory or no shock sensor at all. My insurance company says they run the vin and check the options. If its aftermarket they send me a form and I need to send a card with proof.
I don't think they would see the shock sensor on the VIN. I think it is an "accessory" instead of a factory option. Similar to, say, body side moldings. I don't think your VIN number would reflect the body moldings. Same for the short throw, homelink mirror, etc. I could be wrong, though. I think they would just see your color, model (sti, sti launch, sti ltd) and nav or no nav.

She asked me what it was - active or passive. I said active. I didn't feel like I was lying - I thought it was active.

They tried to check the VIN but had to do an override due to the car being so new I guess. My insurance agent ended up switching me to Safeco from Met Life due to it being much cheaper, though Liberty Mutual gave them a run for their money.
