Does it lay on the intercooler or attach to the hood? I don't see any pics of it.

I'd rather have the screen up inside the scoop to keep all the debris as far away from the IC as possible. And no one would see it either.

basics walkthrough please

I don't know how a screen is going to protect against bugs and sand without severly reducing air flow. You would almost have to put like an air fliter or something real dense to prevent that. I would mainly like to prevent damage from stones so the mesh would not have to be real restrictive. You also have to be careful to not interfere with the sort of seal around the scoop. There is a rubber sort of gasket between the scoop and IC that directs the air into the IC. Putting something over the IC would not let the thing seal properly. Maybe I am talking out of my arse but I know this was mentioned on a website I was looking at that made screens for the last generation STi.

oh in fact it does seals pretty nicely, i am not advertising here, but u don't want to put it on the scoop because this is easier to take out and clean
the bugs just stick on the screen instead of the intercooler, because u can't clean the intercooler.
i think sand would go through, bugs stay tho

I wouldn't worry about sand....too small to do damage. I'm not even that worried about most bugs. I think you should be primarily concerned with good sized rocks.

I know there is a way to attach A screen to the scoop, maybe not that one in particular. The gauge of the screen needs to be on par with something like a chicken wire fence, approx 1/16" thick, and yes the mesh is going to have to be fairly fine.

I'd be concerned about the screen the just sits on the IC. The seal between the scoop and the IC is very important and I don't see how the seal is maintained with a screen between the IC and that seal.

Airflow is probably going to be limited...but what else can you do? Having stones damage the elements of the IC the same way a radiator gets damaged is not acceptable. A radiator is a much larger heat sink while every little pathway through an IC is nearly critical to it's performance.

Before we started to get the cars there was a site fastlineonline.com that sells both types of screens: one that fits the scoop and one that fits the top of the intercooler. It seems to me that a mesh screen on the scoop could stop the bigger stuff without limiting the air flow. SFRinNJ

I spoke to someone at www.fastlineonline.com a few weeks ago about their screen. They'll be developing one specifically for the STi's scoop once they have an actual STi to make a template from. I checked back earlier this week and nothing yet, but I think STi's just got to NH (where they are) approx. 2 weeks ago. Should be there soon I'd guess.

i emailed the seller to see if he can show me a picture of those dual layered screens before i order one, and he said he can get any color you want at $25 shipped, i guess it's not too bad of a deal, but of course carbon fiber should look better.
i just ordered a blue/yellow one
