A1, think of the dipstick end being in a almost horizontal position when fully inserted.
So the oil splash from the last time the engine was running settles on the horizontal flat and that is what you see when the stick is first pulled out in the morning. At least that is how I view it. Then again, cold oil tends to be thick.

Anyway, good luck in the future checking the oil. I run across many who have never ever checked their oil level. Thanks to that fact, I get to have fun at their expense. Engine rebuilds and changes are the s$$t.
