Now that I've had some time to think it over

I live in SoCal and have checked out the EVOs in the area. There is ONE dealer who is not marking them up by 9 to 10k and he puts an extra 3k on the price and gives you a resin coat and a theft alarm in return.

What I am hearing, both here and on the EVO forum is that even people with deposits on file are often being required to pay the markup. Of course, most of these people are walking, but it's something to think about. Do you really believe that when the STI arrives that the dealer won't put a markup on it? And how long will we have to wait till they are sold at MSRP?

Did you see the crap dyno numbers for the EVO III at Vishnu?

I can't speak for them all, but I trust the dealer I went to. I bought a WRX there for my wife less than a year ago, and now I am coming back for the STi. He recognizes this and knows that if he tries to take advantage of repeat customers, he will lose more money in the long run, than he gains in the short term. The STi has one main purpose - to sell WRXs. To lose sight of that would be suicide. Of course, I can't be certain how anyone will act when the time comes.

I think dealerships are like people. Some are short term greedy, while others are long term visionaries. And like people they should be closely scrutinized before giving them a large sum of money. It helped that I saw which dealers marked up the WRX when it first arrived.

I share the very same feelings. Being from the midwest, as my dealer is as well, there may not be contracts or 'official agreements', but when a man gives you his word, that's all you really need. And just to expand on what kind of a person my dealer is, he has sent me both a copy of the brochure and a copy of the official press release and spec sheets. Not because he had to....not because I asked him to....just because it was the right thing to do.

I have no doubts about this. Dealers are ALWAYS free to charge what they want for their cars. If they think they can get a few extra $$ out of it and want to risk the friendship and continued patronage in the future, that's their own moral dilema.

I agree with both of you... the main problem in many places is the lack of competition as most major cities don't have more that two or three dealers. In winnipeg there is only one... they claim that they will sell the sti at mrsp, but wouldn't put it in writing... do you trust them.... well... how bad do we want the feeling of blood compressed agaisnt our optic nerve as we rocket to 60mph? Enough to trust them... maybe...mind you I suspect I'll be blinded purely by the sheer lust for the hp

yeah I'm sure the salesman will love to meet you half way... I bet he makes it in half the time you do. I helped deliver a 911 turbo, 360 miles on it, in 1994 from Louisville to a doctor Lexington KY. I hope that doctor didn't mind that the dealership's 17 yr old car washer pushed it... or rather let it proceed past 140 through horse country.

Oh I didn't say I'D take em up on it, just that they would do it.

Personally, I won't take the car from the dealer unless it still have the plastic on all the seats, the mats are still wrapped up and there are less than 7 miles on the ODO.

Who the hell needs a "resin coat" in Southern California?

Just curious, Clone, why 7 miles? How 'bout 5, or 10, or 13.2?

i *think* he's saying he wants a pristine, just-off-the-truck car; not one that has been a "test mule" for all the 19year old pseudo-prospective buyers. (not to crack on 19year-olds; i was one--19 years ago. ;) )

I can see why you would be concerned if you only have one dealer to go to. I have seven to choose from in a 50 mile radius. Even then I am still hoping for the best, but expecting the worst. No matter how much of a sure thing it seems, I keep convincing myself that I may have to walk away.

No real calculation behind the 7 mile number....just less than 10 and more than enough to get it onto the truck, off the truck, around the back of the dealership, to the gas station if they want to fill it up for me......

Don't want to be an outright ass, but trying to find a way to say "drive it for some unnecessary reason, you're going to swallow half of my foot from the wrong end."

Hey Rob and friends... :D

what I'm actually doing for non-local customers is that I'm helping with getting them here to the dealership and letting their home trip be the break-in period. Also, none of our cars that are ordered get driven by anyone but the mechanic who PDI's it and me to fill the tank. Sometimes, though, Rob they get off of the truck from Subaru with more than 10. Remember that they are also coming from Japan...hehe. There's a few miles right...
