I didn't for my post to be vague but I didn't mean as a first mod more of a question about wasting money on dealer options. Like is the short shifter worth it or should you look at 3rd party vendors make better short shifters than SOA. Sorry again for the confusion. You will find many people on here are more than happy to chime in if you do some of the leg work yourself first.
The questions you pose have all been covered and can easily be found using the search feature or google. The other issue is the question asked is too vague. We don't know what your goals are. You looking for power, handling, aesthetics, creature comforts? Everyone has their own opinion on "the best first mod" but we need to know what your style is before we can provide good feedback.
Also, sarcasm in your second post ever will not encourage others to chime in ... This is not your normal car forum where everyone is a jerk ( see nasioc.com for that). People here are much more respectful, but they expect you to do some leg work as well.
In regards to hatch vs sedan, rear seat is the same. I actually saw a pic with two car seats and a booster crammed into the back seat! That's awesome! I think hatch vs sedan really comes down to personal preference. The hatch has more rear cargo room(more groceries, sports equipment, etc...), but I like the look of the sedan a bit more so I went that direction.
My favorite mod is the Cobb AccessPort, but if you are concerned with warranty issues, my second favorite would be shirt shifter with upgraded front and rear shifter bushings! Make sure you get the bushings! They take the slop out of the stick shift gate.
Hope you get into an STI soon! Can't go wrong with Clint! He has a great reputation here.
:yeahthat: 100% :tup:You will find many people on here are more than happy to chime in if you do some of the leg work yourself first.

Thank you very much, sir.I would skip the SPT short shifter. I have the TWM and love it. Like I said in my above post, the shifter bushings are just as important as the shifter throw.
I did get the SPT exhaust from dealer. I love the sound, and you can finance it with the car instead of shelling out $1,000 as soon as you buy a new car. I don't have any info on the HM exhaust. Might be worth a phone call to AQ.
Only things I would try to get from dealer are all weather mats and cargo nets. Sometimes you can get those kinds of things tossed in for free or at dealer cost.
Only other thing to think about is if you want the fogs, leather, sunroof and nav. I love my fogs and sunroof. Could care less about the leather. If I wanted nav, there are better aftermarket options, but like with the exhaust, you could finance the added cost.
Hope this helps!
