So, here's my car buying / excise tax situation for 08'. This is in Taxachusetts so it may not apply to you... there were 3 bills for 08'.

Bill 1) I traded my 06' STI for an 08' STI in March. I recieved a tax bill ($330 apx) around that time and paid it. This bill was for the 06' STI for all of 2008.

Bill 2) In September I blew a piston on my 08' and traded in for another 08'. In November I received another excise tax bill ($730 apx) and paid it. This bill was for the 1st 08' STI and was for March through the end of the 2008.

Bill 3) In January 09' I received another excise bill for ($350 apx). This bill was for the 2nd 08' STI for date of purchase through the end of 2008. This is the only bill I am not due an abatement for.

Now you don't get an abatement unless you apply for one. In Taxachusetts the town will NOT refund your money otherwise. The town can look at your registration online but still expect you to provide proof of purchase for the abatement... which I think is BS.

I'll try to graph my excise tax paid:

Jan 08': 06' STI
Feb 08': 06' STI
Mar 08': 06' STI / 1st 08' STI
Apr 08': 06' STI / 1st 08' STI
May 08': 06' STI / 1st 08' STI
Jun 08': 06' STI / 1st 08' STI
Jul 08': 06' STI / 1st 08' STI
Aug 08': 06' STI / 1st 08' STI
Sep 08': 06' STI / 1st 08' STI / 2nd 08' STI
Oct 08': 06' STI / 1st 08' STI / 2nd 08' STI
Nov 08': 06' STI / 1st 08' STI / 2nd 08' STI
Dec 08': 06' STI / 1st 08' STI / 2nd 08' STI

What I should have paid:

Jan 08': 06' STI
Feb 08': 06' STI
Mar 08': 1st 08' STI
Apr 08': 1st 08' STI
May 08': 1st 08' STI
Jun 08': 1st 08' STI
Jul 08': 1st 08' STI
Aug 08': 1st 08' STI
Sep 08': 2nd 08' STI
Oct 08': 2nd 08' STI
Nov 08': 2nd 08' STI
Dec 08': 2nd 08' STI

So, I am due an abatement for 9/12 months on my 06' STI. That would be about $250. I am also due an abatement for 4/9 months on my 1st 08' STI. That would be about $320.

I paid $1,410 for excise tax in 08' and I am owed $570 back. I still have to pay the last bill and wait for my abatement!!!!

SO MY POINT TO USE IS DON'T GET F'D by the BS excise tax system... and if you work in MA... live in RI, NH, CT or anywhere else.
