So what do you guys think, will they wise up and cut some fat, add a little more power and boom........

or will the sti continue to degrade and soon become a cruiser...........

How about adding something people actually want?

please at least come out with a track version (and dont try to rape us on the price)

I'm so glad i got my 06 before it was too late!

sure you wish......

anyways..............I would totally agree with you all, except the price went up 5 grand.

You really think its 5 grand better? I sure don't. 5 grand for a softer daily driver, thats heavier, has more turbo lag, no bbs standard.................

Don't be pist at me because you had to pay 10k more for a worse car.....

Sti's were raw and now they aren't.

Wouldn't you have rather seen some power increase, and did the better rear suspension really cost 5 grand? thats the only upside I see to the car. The cars value has gone down for what you get greatly.

so it comes with a crap tune from the factory, but so did the '07.
and that was cured as soon as i connected the accessport.

seriously, have you even driven an '08 ? or are you just jumping on the bandwagon?

Redeem what?
1/4 mile times remained same, if not faster in all magazine tests .
it garnered a top 72mph on the slalom compared to 68mph on 2006 STi's.

Just because you don't like the styling doesn't mean subaru lost anything. The new car outperforms or matches the older model, pretty simple. That's called progress.

^^
depends on the magazine you read. I've seen it clocked as high as 5.2 in a 0-60 and have the worse 1/4 times of any sti. It all depends on what you read. the one thing they all agree is that: "it's more expensive than ever".

The interior on the '08 is just as crap, don't worry. Give it a year or two and then come talk to me about Subaru interiors. They haven't figured out magic yet, they're still using the plastic clips.

The ride may be better on the '08, but people have said that about every new model year of STI since 2004. Yet they continue to use the nasty KYB struts, so again I say ... give it a year or two and then come talk to me again . Nothing magic happened to make KYBs and less crappy. 'Tis why I run Bilsteins on my STI :D.

The wing is a matter of preference. The 2004-07 STI is unapologetically 100% STI. For better or worse, Subaru turned the STI from something unforgettable (and polarizing, as you point out) into something forgettable. I'm sure that was precisely their intention.

IMO the new car performs as good if not better than the previous cars. I still feel it needs redemption though. Remember in 04 when the STI was bada$$ and could stomp just about anything on the street? Now a neon with a boost controller walks us and THAT'S A PROBLEM!!! The STI had an image that's slowly going away. We used to be king and now we're hanging on to stay in the middle of the pack. The next gen STI needs 400hp and a diet to gain back it's respect.

#19 · (Edited)
Yeah I certainly don't think the new STI could pass as nondescript. The WRX maybe but definitely not the STI.

...and those of you that feel the only way to redeem the STI is to give it 400hp so that it doesn't lose to a Neon really ought to take the STI to an autox course or lapping day. That is where you'll see that the STI is still (if not slightly more) badass than ever. Come on, when a heavy stock wagon with limited alignment adjustability can keep out in front of a dedicated sports car like a Nismo Z (see Dan's video), it's obviously not doing too badly.

While I don't advocate street racing, try hooking up with a FWD car making 400+whp on the street. Not a problem in a STI.

The way that I see it, they gave me a car that will be a little bit better on the track and that is much better on the street. They added a stiffer chassis, more compliant suspension, better interior, better utility, and more safety. Even better - the SUBTRACTED the bobblehead, which I'm sure you are all too familiar with on your '06.

I don't understand why everyone tries to cry that the car is more expensive. They added all kinds of safety, some performance, and made the car much nicer overall, and then priced it LESS than the '07 if you account for how weak the US dollar is right now.

It's too bad that the changes that they made don't interest you, but don't assume that everyone else is like you.

#25 ·
No but it doesn't need to go up 5 grand min and loose the nice rims...........

My problem is they weight etc......

I dont think it has to have more power from the factory it could have stayed the same

You say new safety features and performance? besides the rear suspension and better slalom i see no performance gains. Any tangibles?

You want them to make progress?

how about some paint that isn't worse than that of a matchbox car?

i'm no economist... but i don't seem a HUGE difference in the exchange rate in 1/06, 1/07 and today. FXHistory - Historical Currency Exchange Rates

Conversion Table: USD to JPY (Interbank rate)
1/1/06: 117.6810
1/1/07: 119.1160
2/28/08: 106.7980

Conversion Table: JPY to USD (Interbank rate)
1/1/06: 0.0084990
1/1/07: 0.0084020
2/28/07: 0.0093650

I would love to see SOA to bring out a fat trimmed 08'. Throw some carbon parts here and there and get it close to 3k and I think the 08' would be a beast. I didn't like the 08' when I first saw the pics but when I seen it in person I love the inside. Only thing I don't look is the rear veiw of the car love the double exhaust though.

He can make whatever excuse he wants.......

but in reality the car has gone up 5 grand if you don't get mark up......

now you pay 37-40 instead of 30.XXX..............

also the economy sucks so we are making less money etc.. I mean you can't try and justify it however................

however if i had a car that became 1/6 more expensive, id sure want more out of it relative the older one.

Im glad your bobblehead is gone, but you struts prob will be too soon so it doesnt matter.

Shut your mouth with this 5 grand garbage. Look at the MSRP difference, its $1500 between 07 and 08.

Having owned both, I CAN say that the 08 is better than the 06, in EVERY aspect.

Before you ruin your image any more, educate yourself.

What's with all the people who can (supposedly) afford an STI, but who can't add!?!

The STI _has_ gone up in price, from $29,995 MSRP for the 04 model, to $34, 995 MSRP for the 08, but HOW the heck does than equal $40k...

There are OPTIONS which can make the new STI run $37k MSRP, but those are... wait, say it with me... OPTIONS. This is to say NOTHING of invoice pricing which is $33,010.

I'll grant $3-5k is a significant price increase, but the STI is NOT $10,000 more...

#34 ·
most people prefer the options and MOST people pay alot more than invoice... depending on where they live and what dealer they get their car from... another thing to consider is that once you start financing over 30k you are looking at a hefty car payment.

So? Would you rather have 17x7.5 BBS or 18x8.5 heavy ass stockers that most people are going to replace anyway?

And remember kids, the car went up $1500 from last year. If you consider the wheel option, then it went up $3500. That's far from $10,000 that some people think it went up. I'm pretty happy about paying just over $33k for mine.

Find a car that hasn't gone up in price...

This thread really is pointless. It's not going anywhere, and you're pretty much repeating what others have said before. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

Hmm, I think the 08 has its merits. For people who've never driven a previous gen STI, then its awesome. But for people who already own a 04-07, then its much less of an upgrade considering you'll have to loose money on the trade in, and then some more when buying a new car.

i drove a '04 sti from 2004 through 2007. modded the crap out of it too.
the '08 i have now is overall a better car. yes it's less "raw". yes, it's got a quiet interior.
does that make it worse ? i don't think so :) besides all that, there's quite a bit more that got "upgraded" ;)

and now i'm out of this thread. feel free to keep on argueing about how bad the '08 is, i'll just keep enjoying mine :)

Far as I can see STI's are great all year:tup:, compaired to many other companies. While back, there weren't that many performance cars so It wasn't too difficult to be ahead:D. as far as subaru redeeming the sti, why bother? to people's eyes it may look softer, feel slower:(, but in paper they improved during the past years:). if I think carefully, 400+ hp stock car, not many people will be able to handle that kind of power:eek:. Im always used to seeing fast cars smashing the rail on freeways because the car was too fast to handle for those non experienced rich people:lol:. if the current hp doesn't satisfy you, and you want more power, you do what you can to make that power. Thats what i think:). Far as me owning one...it's always been my dream to own a sti once in my life, and i see a lot of potential for this car.

jesus fvcking christ.

i have a proposal for a new forum guideline... if you don't have any seat time in an '08 then STFU about the handling, power, power delivery, ride quality/ride softness.

styling, interior, exterior, price and options are all fair game. HAVE AT IT. TYPE AWAY, YOU CRAZY KEYBOARD WARRIORS!

How about adding something people actually want?

I'm so glad i got my 06 before it was too late!

They did add something people actually want. It's exactly what I want in a car, so I ordered one. I've owned some pretty fast and heavily modified cars, but I'm past that phase. Now I want refined performance. I want a stealthy, reasonably fast AWD car, and to not get harassed by the cops. I want cargo space. I want a comfortable, quiet ride. They designed the car for people like me, not you. The sooner you can accept that fact and get over it, the sooner you will find inner peace.

I'm also glad you got your 06. You should enjoy it and be happy, since it's the right car for you. And if you're truly happy, then you should not feel any need to come into the 08 threads and pee all over everything.

exactly. This is the car you buy when you can't break down and buy a vet or whatever. This is the new early/late mid-life car. Accept it guys Subi wants to sell cars to the 35-55 somethings now. The 18-35 crwod helped them make their money they now tip their hat to as they take our money and walk away from their soon forgotten past. Just buy a Dodge Magnum guy.
