im picking up my sti in a few weeks and am wondering about the break in period. Where does the 1k mile break in come from, ive always heard 500. Im def going to do the 1k break in i would just like to know.

another thing is that i will be driving it from the dealers lot to my house which is 500 miles away. I want to take it home that same day but would it be better for the engine if i drove a few hundred miles then stayed the night in a hotel and drive the rest the next day.

also it will be highway most of the way so going 60 or 65 for 400 -500 miles. Is this to quick of a break in

thanks

I had a similar problem with the pickup of my car. I would suggest that you vary your speed every 20 minutes. I read thread somewhere that suggested every 20 min changing gears from 6th to 5th and driving in 5th for 20 min. It didn't seem to hurt the car so that is what I did for 150 miles. Every so often I would punch it and get the speed up to 90 or 100 mph. Unless your on the open plain you should approach traffic and that will vary your speed also.

Have fun on your drive home and remember to take a radio with you. If you take a cd player make sure you have at least a 45 second Cd skip. This car feels every bump in the road and my cd player was useless. It must have looked funny though...me in a $31,000 car with a portable stereo driving down the road with the antenna sticking up out the window.(It was only for 150 miles)

Trust me, you can go plenty fast without going over the 4000 rpm limit. In fact I have a hard time keeping the car under speeds of 80-100 mph and I'm not going over the 4 mark. This is a FAST car!

You're also not supposed to accelerate agressively. Let me tell you, you will not have any problem cutting through traffic at half-throttle!

My technique was to speed up to 90, lift off the gas and slowly drop back down to 60 then get back on the gas. Rise. Repeat.

Worked for me, anyway.

Really? I figured the gearing would leave 4k in 6th pretty low?

Someone try it over lunch....what speed does 4k in 6th give you?

Yup me too. I just rolled over 850 miles on the way in to work today. I should hit 900 by tonight. Oh man, might have to take a long lunch tomorrow. I can't wait!!! All these people that for some reason have to ride my ass off a stop at a red light or floor it around me will soon see me take off when "provoked". :D No more mediocre sport sedans or ricers taking me off the line again. Time for some educating.

I have 2,400 miles on my car now. 80mph is 3,100 in 6th. If I remeber correctly 100 is about 3,800rpm. I did look at the rpm when going 120.

There is plenty of passing power at 80 in 6th. A quick stab will leave you at 90 in a couple of seconds. 100 is just a little while longer.

With the cruise set at 85mph I got 22.0-23.1 mpg. Range is about 320-340miles. I would usually stop at about 250-280 because that is where the bigger towns (cheaper gas prices) are along the way.
