Hey everyone!

So I bought a 2016 STI Limited back in December with about 34k on it. I now have 39k and recently took it to the dealer for an oil change. They inspected the brakes and most of the pads are between 4-5/32. However, the pads on the front right were worn down to 2/32. The dealer suggested maybe the pads are hanging up? How about the slide pins not working properly?

Any thoughts on what to check/how to diagnose?

Is there a way to determine if I need new rotors as well as pads?

Any advice on how to prevent this from happening again in the future?

The car was bought as a CPO with the Gold Package from a Subaru dealer (7yr/100k bumper-to-bumper). I'll have to confirm, but I believe the dealer I purchased from replaced the pads. Could they have done something incorrectly during the replacement to cause this to happen?

I can provide more detailed information tomorrow if necessary.

Thanks!

The only way the pads can "hang up" is if the pistons/calipers are sticking and not retracting properly.

The slide pins hold the metal bracket that holds the pads in the slot. They don't really affect performance or wear of the pads.

Rotor replacement is determined by the thickness of the rotor to be within spec, and/or if you feel vibration while braking.

To me, it looks like the pads weren't replaced. Probably measured, found to be within "Certified" spec, and OK'd.

I agree with Noximus - it sounds like the pads are original. I don't see how you could wear through them in 5k without a bunch of track time or a very obvious problem, but I could completely see pads being necessary at 39k.

Bought a 2016 back in July of 2018. Hit just a tad over 36k and was told they'd need to be replaced around 3-5k. Got to maybe 39-40k and had them done. So I would guess the same as others, stock pads that were deemed to be OK for the car being sold.

Did they say they replaced the pads, or is because it was a CPO that you thought they did??
