 Here is my dilemna. The local dealer is getting one maybe two STI's. I have been in contact with a salesperson I trusted for over a year now and they assured me that I didn't need to put any money down at the time and that I had first right of refusal. Today she called me to let me know that I need to go ahead and put 1k down now that others are asking about it...no problem I thought. She also told me at this time that the dealer will probably be tacking on a 5k markup. This is the same amount that this chain of dealers tacked on to the S2000. Although their S2000's came with all kinds of extra crap like spoilers and pinstripes. If the STI msrp's at 28-31k then I can deal with the markup although I certainly would rather not. The problem lays in the fact that I did not get on other lists, and stupid me didn't get an msrp guarantee in writing. Your suggestions? Bite the bullet and take what I get? Tell them to stick their markup and not be able to get one for another year? Find a dealer that nobody knows about that is willing to offer msrp and doesn't have anyone on their list? (Yeah right) Argh! I suck!

Even to this day, S2000s have that 5k markup. Well, do you seriously need to get the STI when it comes out? You need to weigh your priorities. Personally, it is a matter of principle and i wouldn't pay 5k over msrp.

sounds like your dealer is doing what the mitsu dealers are doing: using big markups to alienate buyers. that makes sense, doesn't it? ;) i'd tell 'em to jam it. $5k markup plus ttl on (*optimistically*) $31k? you're near $40k. way too rich for me.

i went with my friend's dad (a former new car salesman) to look at s2000s when they first came out. the first dealership we went to was marking up $8K. the salesperson gave this big shpeel and could tell that he had greg interested. then he popped the (eight-thousand-dollar) question:
for $40K, why wouldn't i buy an slk?
the guy was speechless. greg said (loud enough so that two other prospective buyers could hear) "i'm going to so-and-so's dealership, they're selling for msrp over there" and left. we were talking in the parking lot and saw the other two prospective buyers leav within 2min.

what baffles me is that people will pay it. i've called and talked to both dealerships in my area recently and the one charging $5K over msrp and getting $1000 for a refundable deposit had more deposits than the one charging msrp and wanting $500 refundable.

Heh, which dealership is charging msrp? And how many deposits do they have?! Another spin off question is this, perhaps Murley or someone like that can answer it. You get your first allotment of 1-5 sti's or whatever and they go to all the people on your list assuming they don't refuse them. When does the next shipment come in? How far back on a msrp dealer's list am I going to end up?

By the way, if any of you are ever in the Mississippi area, I would greatly appreciate you stopping by and kicking me in the gonads. I would if I could but I can't so I haven't, even though I need to.

Nod I won't pay more than 36k for an STI no matter what. That is all my woman will allot for me to spend. Heh. I was thinking that if we get lucky and the STI is priced at 29k (like it should be Subaru!) then that would put it at 34k after the markup, assuming the markup is 5k. I wasn't even considering all the TTL crap. Don't worry about me being THAT stupid, I would never pay 40k+ for this car, if for no other reason than principle.

Well, with ttl and assuming a fairly average 5% tax..that's nearly $36K. Trust me..the STi will not be that low of a price. It will be about $2K more than the Evo. It has always been that way since the dawn of STi vs. Evodom. :)

I highly doubt they will get more than 1 STi in the first shipment. I really doubt ANY dealership will get more than 1 in the first shipment. If Subaru is only releasing around 300 a month and there are 600 dealerships in the US, you do the math. Unless some dealerships won't get any.

Yeah, dealerships will be getting one STi at a time, and they will only be getting the cars if they have sold orders for them...that's what the rumors are.

You need to get a sold order placed for the car. The Subaru standard is a $500 refundable deposit to order one. You haven't gotten that. It sounds like your dealer has been playing you all along.

As it has been said over and over again.....don't think you can pull an STi from a dealer lot for MSRP...it won't happen. You need to get the dealer to order you one......deposit down all the while.

What happened to exposing the scumbag dealers such as this?? C'mon, spill it....

S2000's around me are going for UNDER MSRP right now. My friend paid the $8K markup in MY 2000, but he really really really wanted the car and could well afford it... I personally wouldn't do it.

But I didn't think the S2000 was selling too well. That along with the sucky economy has made the Honda dealers round here actually sell the cars at or even slightly below MSRP....

Remember that with a markup, you are not financing that markup. It is literally like handing the dealership the x amount for nothing.

If you really really want the car, couldn't one just wait to save the 8k? I mean, 8k is a lot of mods for that car.

I agree. Like I said, I wouldn't do it.

And I agree with yxan...

I guess people need to remember that there is always a choice - however, it would really suck if you couldn't get an STi because of some dealer marking up the price.

No car is worth over the invoice price! if you can pay at least $500 over invoice price, your in good hands....if you look up your subi dealer in the better business bureau to see if they have bad reputation its best if you don't buy your car from a thief!

Okay..., how about I throw my $.02 out here.

1st) I do know that so far I will be getting 1 STi in June. And yes, I don't think that ANY Subie dealer will be getting more than 1.

2nd) In regards to mark-up. DON't DO IT!!!!! Not only will you pay interest on that money if you finance, but you can save yourself THOUSANDS of dollars by going somewhere else... (namley, here :D )

3rd) Even if I have an STi on the lot because of some retarted moron who would turn one down, I will still sell it at MSRP. It won't last long, but I'll sell it at MSRP.

It's as plain and simple as this..., some people will pay for a mark-up. Some people out there also pay $20,000 for a Dodge Neon. It is absolutely stupid to pay a dime over MSRP, no matter the car!!!

Also, I got pricing for the WRX in the 04MY and with the moonroof and "All Weather Package" (on the WRX called the "Premium Package") it's going to be $25,995 for the 5speed. STi will have to be more than $29k.

Cecilia, you won't pay under MSRP. I can guarentee that. Being a subie dealer I can tell you that I've had people walking in my door for a year and a half asking for STi's. Until recently, I've had nothing to tell them. If you go to the dealer that you have your order in with and tell them your plan on price they will refuse and sell it on their lot for $2K over MSRP within 3 days. The reality is this..., the Honda Odessy (a stupid MINIVAN) still sells for MSRP and it's been out for more than 4 years. Honda makes 20,000 Odessy's a year. Now think, will a Subie dealership wo is getting 12 per year discount a Brand New STi that Subaru is only making 5000 per year of...? They won't. It will be MSRP or nothing, I expect.

Mrsp is the only way to go... When a dealer says he's marking it up, what he's really saying is: " I am going to out right sell from you... sucker! just because i can." Alot of it is the feast or famine thought... Like when the VW bug first came out people would pay it... so the dealers run with it... now look at the sales for the bug... they can't give them away. Short sightedness could kill the sales of these cars if they aren't careful
