Just seeing what people think about different alarm systems? I've heard Cliffords are good.

I'm looking for something that is excellent at shock sensing, more of a vandalism deterant than anything. I don't believe in all the crazy "thief proof" stuff...there is no such thing.

I'd really like to look into something with a pager setup too. Anyone with experience with those?

I don't know about the alarm part but I am definetly getting something like the system at www.trackmenow.com to help protect the car.

If the alarm is tripped, this system will call you, page you or email you and let you know immediately about it. IF your car is stolen, it notifies you immediately so you can notify the police. It has GPS tracking technology. Pretty close to thief proof if you ask me...

A while back I was installing Cliford alarms and they had to ship us a box of about 10 extra brains because they were failing so often. Sometimes even right out of the box! I have always used Prestige or Alpine alarms with great results.

My stereo/alarm expert buddy removed my store-installed Code Alarm when I sold my last vehicle. He said that the store he works at doesn't sell them but it was probably the best set-up he has seen. It has starter-disable and all that jazz, and even if they rip it out it won't start or anything. Plus it has a readily accessible knob that you can adjust the impact sensors with. And it can get REAL sensitive. I have set mine off starting up a lawn mower a few yards away. The newer models can send pages and such I believe...hope this helps.

I've looked around a little and I havent been able to find anything about what kind of alarm comes stock. I've seen "Comprehensive keypad alarm security system" when talking about features, but thats all the information I can find. I'd like to know if I'll be satisfied with the stock one, or if I should pick an an aftermarket one to give me peace of mind.

I found this on a UK site when looking for alarm information. If we get the same thing, I think i'd be satisfied.

"In addition, all Imprezas continue to benefit from keyless-entry central-locking and a Category One remote alarm/immobiliser. The WRX STi Type-UK also has a satellite tracking system."

If we end up getting the same package, then I think all the people talking about buying aftermarket alarms and GPS can relax and start worrying about installing other goodies on their cars.

I've still yet to find anything that is related to the US release, so please share if you find anything.

I have a remote starter/alarm on my Legacy that I got a couple years ago. It does not say Compustar on it but it looks exactly like thier older unit. I mainly got it for the remote starter. It works great. Mine was rated at 2000'. You are still limited by how much obstruction is between you and the car though. Even if you are within the range but there is a lot of things between you and the car it probably won't work. Mainly concrete like if you park in a parking garage or are in the mall, I doubt it will work. The newer the battery the farther it works. The new ones could be a lot better though. I know the range is rated at 6000' now and it has spread spectrum technology or something. For my STi I am going to look into something that works with a cell phone so I can be notified wherever I am. Unless the cell phone thing is too pricey or there is some crazy monthly fee then I will probably look into this unit.

Has anybody heard of the Compustar alarm system (www.compustar.org)? It comes with a nifty pager....
Is it any good?

I have a CompuStar in my '02 WRX, and I love it. the built in remote starter, turbo timer, paging feature, LCD status display remote and extra accesory activators that can be hooked in are amazing. The range is up to a quarter of a mile and works pretty well from inside buildings. I'm definitely putting one in the STi and making sure I hook up one of the accessories so I can put the windows down with the remote.

I might have made it sound like mine does not work far but I live on the 9th floor of my apt building... I park 2 floors underground and the remote will start my car from my apartment. I was pretty surprised when it worked the first time I tried it. Now remember, mine is the older 2000' rated unit. The new ones are suppose to be 6000'.

Adding the STi

This is a pic of mine. This is the older model I got a couple years ago. There are multiple indicators from low battery, car started, car running, out of range, initial alarm, full alarm, door open, etc. You can kind of see by all the indicators. When the alarm goes off a sort of hammer appears like it is hitting the car and the thing beeps like crazy. The nice thing is, when the alarm is initially tripped the key fob beeps like crazy, but the car alarm only gives like a couple beep warning, probably not scaring anyone away giving you time to go out and "deal" with them, but if they do something again then the full alarm goes off. It's a pretty nice setup.

I didn't know that was a CompuStar, but we have the exact same remotes for our vans at work that MKIVSupra has in the pic there. I got a page one time when I was deep within a power plant where I was behind half a billion dollars worth of steel and concrete. I didn't try the remote start from in there, but the pager feature is great!
