I bought a used 2017 wrx and decided to buy an accesport. I bought one from a friend who had same year as me said it was completely unmarried and uninstalled

when I hook it up to my car if the above was true. Wouldn’t it ask to install? I’m wondering if my car had an accesport installed and never properly unmarried as I would tend to believe my friend who sold me the access port do you think that’s the case? There was an access port installed on my car without me knowing as again I bought it used if someone can just clarify when you buy a truly unmarried and uninstall properly access port, and you hook it up to a car. The first thing you should see is the install screen this one keeps searching for data so I’m assuming my car must’ve had an access port and if that’s the case is there a way to reverse that so I can keep this access port, but possibly either get a new ECU or have this one reflash thanks

If it's unmarried it will give you the install option.

I am trying to deduce that. I would hope that my friend knowingly or unknowingly wouldn’t lie about it but if my car was tuned before and I plugged in a brand new access port, that’s never been installed on any vehicle before I’m wondering what that would look like if it doesn’t give the opportunity to install then I’d have to assume that my car previously had an access port married to it that may have not have been uninstalled properly, if that in fact is the case, is there a way to reset the ECU so that I can get a different access port married to my vehicle

If I’m not mistaken, even if your car is married to an accessport, plugging in a new one that is unmarried will give you the option to switch over to the new one.
I’ve seen people commenting ‘my car is married but I don’t have the AP what do I do to revert back to stock?’
and the answer is… ‘borrow an unmarried accessport, marry, revert to stock, then unmarry’
So with that said, if the AP you have is unmarried you should be able to pair to the new one even if the car is currently tuned with a different one

OK I’m gonna try one more time to hook this up. I’m gonna take a screenshot of what the access port looks like when I hook it up hoping that my friend wouldn’t sell me something under false pretenses but maybe he just doesn’t know anyway, I just wanna know to be sure what to do next either if this AP is actually married I guess I have no other option if that’s what it comes down to to send it back to Cobb to get reset at cost but I’m hoping that I don’t have to do that but we’ll see more to follow. I’ll share the pic with you when I get a chance I appreciate all the feedback.

I wouldnt pin any malicious intent on your friend. The general population/community is a bit... dumb. If anything, just get a refund from your friend and tune your car with a different software.
