I was given the opportunity to flog an Evo 8 this weekend. A friend of mine who belongs to my crew got a Tarmac Black Evo 8 with the spoiler and nothing else. One word impression....WOW!!! He let me flog his car cause i will let him drive my STI when i get it. We all share like that.

Anyways the car looks a whole lot better in person than in pictures. Especially in Black with those silver rims and red brembos. Also you hardly notice how gross ugly the front end is on the black evo.
The recaro seats were an absolute dream. I wouldn't replace em they are so nice. The interior is bland and cheapish compared to STI though.

I have been a huge Evo fan for years, but i was extremely dissapointed with this one missing AYC, ACD, a sixth gear, slower ratioed gearbox, less hp and torque, weighing more and the very ugly redesign. That is why i am buying the STI instead of the USDM evo 8! I was expecting to be dissapointed with this car missing all this but i wasn't. Its scary that this car handles this good without ayc and acd. I can't imagine what it does with them. It was a surgical handling car the likes of which i have only experienced in a lotus elise i drove in the past. Its brakes were fantastic showing no signs of fade even after repeated runs. And they stopped on a dime.

Power was impressive if not a little non existent at low rpms. once you got up in 1st it was a rocket. Then you shift into 2nd right in the turbos sweet spot and you were gone. I can only imagine how awesome the STI will be with more hp and the AVCS. The evo ate corners and then launched outta them like you wouldn't believe. And the gearbox was butter when it came to shifting quickly. It may not be as good as a JDM evo's box but it is still fantastic.

I was expecting to be dissapointed and i let my friend know this before i took out his car. Lets just say he didn't let me hear the end of it all day when i had to admit the Evo rocks. It's o.k. cause i smoked his ass all day in my RX-7 and my STI will be better than his evo anyways! :D

So there is my impression of the Evo 8. STI will be faster, look better and probably last longer. But we have seen the magazines say that the evo out handles, out brakes and we know it costs 2k(base price) less than the STI. This war is gonna be awesome over the next few years. Now if Mitsubishi counters next year with an Evo with AYC, ACD, 6 speed JDM gearbox, JDM horsepower and Torque and a redesigned front end(hey subaru did it) for say another 3k.....then things will get real interesting. Then Subaru brings us a Spec C to counter the new Evo...I am so happy that we are getting japanese sports cars in america again. Its like the mid 90's again, except without the ludicrous price tags! Peace!!

Congrats on the drive!

You know the most impressive part of all that you have said....the STi is better or damn close in all respects......but of course in our beloved STi package and built by the respected Subaru.

Can't wait....can't wait.......

Thanks for the review X. I don't know about the rest of you but the next car I buy I'm gonna have for a few years at least. With that said, reliability is key so Sube is for me! These cars are close enough in performance that at my level the diffrence is negligable. With SUbe's reliability I'll have fun for years to come.

I'm a little concerned about that too. The suspension I have in the Celica is anything but harsh by race standards, but it gets kinda rough. I have a bad feeling that the STi is going to be the 'factory' kind of daily driver meets track. If that's the case, it'll be too soft and rolly by my standards.

On the other hand, the suspension I have is the TRD setup, who of course is the STi to Toyota. Maybe we'll be alright. Holding out hope!

How was the ride quality, do you think it is bearable for an everyday driver?
It was quite hard for a factory car. I liked it though. I like my cars like that. Around where i live it would be no big deal at all. If you live in a large urban area with less than ideal roads it would probably get on your nerves though. Peace!!
