SOA recommends "premium" fuel for the STI...but with so many octane options today what does this mean? I usually use 89 octane for my cars which is the middle fuel option in most gas stations. I see that most of you guys use 91 and above. Is premium considered 91 octane? If it is would using 89 be really bad for the STI?

You bought your car in NY, so you should be using 93. Using 89 will give you poorer fuel mileage, poorer performance, and decrease your engine life.

I believe in the manual it says at least 93 octane, but 91 is supposedly sufficient. 89 oct will have higher chance of detonation, especially on a turbo motor. 110+ w/ propane injection;).

Don't cheap out on the gasoline. You've got a performance car, not a Ford Escort. Anything below 91 is not only bad for performance, it's taking a big chance on detonation which our stock pistons do not like.

OT: Just why the heck does any station carry 89 anywho? Every car I have had was either 87 or "as much octane as you can find" sure there are some cars that benefit from a couple of octane points due to mechanical problems, but it would make it so much easier on pumping and such. (even though most pump just mix 93 and 87, but I would rather see 93 or 94(!) than 89...

because most people are stupid and they love their cars. it's the perfect setup combination to sell them more octane than they need or, in the case of the original poster, less than he needs.
