6th gear instead of reverse

Update: I panicked for no reason. Apparently the drive mode selector limits boost. Who knew!? I was in intelligent drive which keeps you around 8lbs. I guess I was in sport or sport sharp up until then. Was getting about 16.7 lbs of boost then it got stuck at around 8 so I panicked. Thank you for reading about my idiotic self.

Hello long time sti owners! I am brand spanking new to the sti. I made a goof and now I feel I might be in a Crap situation.

Just bought a used 2016 sti, haven’t driven a manual in ten years(8 maybe?) and last I drove a five speed not a 6 speed. So! Backing out of my driveway I naturally moved the shifter over to the right and down, unfortunately I did not lift the release and move it ALL the way to the right and down to reverse. I was in 6th gear and revved, let off the clutch, there was a weird grind noise really fast and what I thought was maybe smoke coming from my exhaust.

Now I’ve only put 160 miles on this thing since I got it, and I swear I hear a rattle that wasn’t there before and it seems like my boost struggles to go past 8 lbs

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Besides calling me a dummy.

Thank you all very much in advance!

The noise only happened in the instance I left off the clutch. The car is stock, but could of been messed with as it is used. And I don’t think I revved it too high as I was just trying to reverse out of my driveway, no crazy shenanigans. And I didn’t dump the clutch, as it made the noise I caught it before it stalled or anything and pressed it back in then it kind of wound down and went away, but now I find it hard to get the boost past 8-8.5 lbs.

And I’ve tried getting the boost up(gently) in 2nd through 4th.

"Smoke was clutch smell. No problem.

Boost and noise issues? The above didn't cause them whether or not they are real.

You need to determine if there is any real issue becuase if there is you want to stay out of boost untill it is operating properly. You should not force boost if there is an issue.

I’m going to try one more time to get the boost up, I’m still under factory warranty bumper to bumper, and if it doesn’t go up, it goes to the shop. I think, THINK! I know what the rattle noise was, two hoses came undone from their plastic open ended clips, so I’d bet they just rattled against those.

Thanks everyone for the help, if it’s anything serious I’ll post an update. Just in case there’s more than one dummy out there

It didn’t come undone from its connection. It got loose from a hold down clip. I’ve been thinking a boost leak but I wasn’t even under load when it happened and don’t know how it would of popped anything out to create a leak. I also don’t have a rough idle.

Unless it idling high when I first turn it on counts as rough idle but I am not sure if it did that when I first got it or not.
