Yesterday (just for fun) i went to a mitsu dealership and asked a couple of question about the 2 evolutions they had on sale. I was surprised to hear what came out of this guy's mouth.

I asked for the price and he answered..."sticker is around $31K but we are not selling it at that price becuase of supply and demand" So i asked him again, what's the price and he said..."no matter where you go you will not find it for sticker price, how serious are you about getting one, if your serious i'll see what i can do for you but my boss is probably not gonna let me sell it for less than $36k" I acted surprise but i already knew a price markup was coming.

This is the best part, i asked what about the competition, the subaru SIT or STI (i was acting dumb) or something like that and he said....."what's that?" I said, "that new car that subaru is coming out with that is suppose to be really fast", he said...."oh, that car". He acted like he had never heard of it but then magically started to remember things about it...."that car is gonna be nice but how much money do you want to spend? You do know the price right? Its gonna be around $40K" I was like, "are you sure thats the price. I heard that it was gonna be around the low 30s" He said "no way, the STI is gonna be even more limited that the evolution, what makes you think that its gonna be the same price, we got word from our offices in japan that its gonna be around $40k and you know that subaru is gonna be marking up like crazy, so your looking around $45k before taxes." It didn't stop there..."STI doesn't even have all the things that the evolution has for example, it doesn't have an turbocharger, it doesn't have these really cool headlights, i could stand here and say all the things wrong with the STI but i wouldn't want to waste your time." At time point you can just imagine how pissed i was getting but i stayed cool.

Before I left i asked to sit inside of it and he wouldn't let me, so i figured could i atleast see the engine, but i was shot down once again. If all mitsu dealerships are like this guy, then i know that i will never own a mitsu car in my life.

So this is my question to everybody, could it be true? Part of me is saying, nah the dealer was just saying that to sell the marked up evolution but part of me is saying, damn i hope its not true, i hope its not $40k.

no it's not true! the sti *does* have a turbocharger! heh heh. just messing wit-cha.

in a court of law, this guy would be the worst witness. since his statements can be construed as self-serving, you can't discern their veracity. they're worthless, *especially* since he unknowingly demonstrated his lack of knowledge about the sti. in fact, his initial pretense of not knowing about the car turned out to actually be the case. that's really hilarious, if you ask me.

to answer your ? though, the sti will probably sell for (or be marked as) $40k from some dealers *off the floor*. but it doesn't take a scientist to figure that out. it *is* supply and demand. but high gas prices and a crappy economy tend to reduce demand. <shrug>

Wow....ignorance is bliss, isn't it? HAHAHA You should give the name and number of that dealer so we can call and laugh!

As for mark up, as it has been discussed too many times.....

Anything is possible. Many of us have guarantees of MSRP, but of course no transactions have actually been made to say that for sure. STis that make it to the dealer lots....I believe those will have mark ups. That's just the way the world works. Mercedes could sell their cars for 10k less than what they do now, but that just doesn't happen. Bottom line for most places is making money.

Keep in mind though...MSRP is a great deal for dealers. They make money on invoice prices as it is.....they'd love to get guaranteed deals for MSRP.

Really, can you blame the guy for this kind of behavior? He is not going to come out and say that Subaru "bitch-slapped" Mitsu by bringing a stronger STi to counter the EVO. They guy was probably shaking in his boots when you mentioned the STi - just knowing the existance of the STi is a good indicator that you are aware of the EVO/STi competition, and he was probably trying to convince you that the press coverage of the STi is misleading or incomplete. I don't blame you though - I would never think of buying a Mitsu, especially if I had the kind of experience like you did at one of their dealerships
