2008 vs 2009

I'm knowledgeable within the GD series, but the GR's i'm clueless. I had a 2006 Sti that I sold, but I'm more than likely going to be buying either a 2008 STI, or a 2009 STI, or maybe even an Evo 8. A buddy of mine who is a Subaru fanatic, he's had atleast 6, told me that the 2008 is the slow one. I know they're all fast, but what differs from the 2008 to the 2009? I remember with the GD's they had a website that had all the differences but I forgot it. Can anyone tell me if they drive an 08 or an 11 and explain the differences?

there isn't a 'slow' STi.

the real comparison you should be doing is 04-07s to 08s+, IMO. sure, there are differences between all years to account for, but this is where there is a distinct/major difference in driving feel and overall... in 08+, the cars became a little more refined, but at the expense of feeling less raw mechanically, weighing a little bit more, and being slightly slower.there's also the advancement of technology and inclusions of a lot of electrical nanny systems that irritate some people.

if you're getting an evo 8 .. just get the 9 instead! they can be had for the same price, at times, and it's worth it. get a 5 speed model if you are going the evo route.

sorry I can't be of more help with listing all of the differences. hopefully it's still somewhat helpful.
As far as WRX STIs go, there are no differences between all 08-10 models (not including SE), except the ability to turn off hill assist for 09+. It's the WRXes that had the most dramatic changes between 08 and 09.

This^^^^

No change in performance of STI from 08-09. Your buddy is referring to the Wrx. 08 was 224hp 09 got a nice bump to 265hp as well as ground effects and a nicer interior. Stay away from 08wrx.

You already got your answer, but I ran across a good difference by year write-up a few weeks back if you're curious.

09 had the best stock tune in relevance to the lean AFR conditions. also 09 has a lot less problems with the engine (or so it seems) over the 08.

also 09 has less chrome
