Hi folks,

Nice site, learned a ton here so far so here's my contribution.

Picked up a 2005 WRB STi last August. It's been the car that I lusted for throughout college and into my young adult years (I'm 31).

For the last 7 years, I've been doing trackdays on sportbikes. 3 years ago I made the jump into racing, and recently went from Novice to Expert. Wife and I decided it was time to start a family, so I'm putting the racing on hold for a few years. But I will be back!

I'm #927 and I'm racing an 05 Suzuki SV650 (fantastic bikes).

So with racing on hold, I had the time and money for my realistic dream car, the 2005 STi in WRB. Found a very nice example with 34k miles in Chicago, so I flew out there, bought it, and drove it back home.

When I picked it up it had:
-Whiteline springs
-Invidia V3 downpipe
-Injen cai
-NO TUNE

Didnt do enough research prior to buying this and didnt realize that an intake/dp without a tune was a no-no.

Here she is as-is for the first time in my driveway:

Did some research, decided to visit EFI to get a tune, so I added an AccessPort to my list of mods.

Getting a tune at EFI.

Chris managed 289 whp and 301 wtq on their Mustang dyno. As everyone knows, EFI is an awesome place, and they'll be building my stage 2 block (more on that in a few posts).

Here she is sitting next to my Harley in the garage.

Re: 2005 WRB weekend warrior

So the plan was to keep it as close to stock as possible and put only an exhaust on. MAYBE wheels.

So the first thing I did was swap out the stock catback for a Cobb cbe.

As many of you know, the Cobb starts at 2.5" at the downpipe and opens up to 3". So I had a buddy of mine replace the 2.5" section with a 3" flange and flex pipe, so the exhaust is a full 3" (minus the little indent).

From there, I was perfectly content for a month or so.

Only 2 things I ever regret selling: my 2004 Honda RC51 and my Recaro SRD's that I had in my 2002 RSX Type-S.

The RC I'll pick up again (has to be an 04). My wife knew how much I missed the seats, so for my 30th bday she picked these up for me.

Now I had a car that sounds the way I liked it, and had the seats I missed.

Re: 2005 WRB weekend warrior

So 2 things about me:
-When I get stressed, I buy something. 99% of the time it's something small. Cup of coffee, magazine, maybe a candy bar. Nothing big. I had one month at work where I was so stressed I decided to upgrade my turbo and put on supporting mods.
- I'm very impatient, and like to do things asap :)

So in 1 fell swoop, I ordered:
-Blouch 20GXTR
-Grimmspeed uppipe w/ Tial 44 mm EWG
-Grimmspeed TGV deletes
-Grimmspeed EBCS
-AMR hard inlet (which I later replaced with a Perrin soft inlet)
-Spearco TMIC
-DW 850cc injectors
-Walbro 255 lph fuel pump
-AEM boost, oil pressure, and uego gauges
-All new gaskets

I apologize for the quality of the photos, these were all taken with my Droid 2.

Before:

During:

(first time on the intake manifold, didn't have much fun with it)

Re: 2005 WRB weekend warrior

While I was taking care of the power, I bought the following for the exterior:

-18x8 OZ Allegerita wheels in white
-235/40/18 Dunlop Direzza Star Specs
-Seibon RC carbon fiber hood
-Syms replica wing

Car looked like this (apologies again for the grainy pics, and Syms replica wing wasn't installed at this time).

Re: 2005 WRB weekend warrior

So with the mods on, it was time to get tuned.

I initially wanted to go back to EFI, but they were 3 hours away and booked for a few weeks out, and my impatience led me to look around. I found a local tuner and tried them.

They checked the compression (145 across the board), did a smoke test, found/fixed a few minor leaks, then tuned the car.

Put down 312 whp/294 tq (stock STi's dyno 210-215).

Most people on the board thought the numbers were low (even on a Mustang dyno) and that the spool was a little late.

Not really satified with the output, I opted to order up the next set of mods:
-Grimmspeed PnP header
-Aquamist HFS2 Meth kit

While doing that, I also had the brakes upgraded.
-Stoptech slotted rotors
-Carbon Lorraine pads
-Goodridge SS lines
-Motul fluids
-Hotchkis front and rear sway bars w/endlinks (only front installed for now)

Also had a new clutch (Carbonetics Blade) and oem flywheel installed.

Didnt do any of the above mods myself.

Re: 2005 WRB weekend warrior

With the header and meth kit, retuned at Akuma, the numbers were 322 whp and 298 wtq :(

VERY disappointed. Plus the turbo didnt reach full spool until 4300 rpm!

John @ Akuma thought there may be something wrong with the turbo.

I had a trackday in 2 days, so I decided to run it as-is and take the turbo off later and get it inspected.

First trackday at NJMP Thunderbolt. I've put many laps on at this track, but all of them on a bike. This was my first time in a car on a track.

It was fun. I did a session with a bike towards the end of the day, and I have to admit that I had a lot more fun on the bike than in the car.

At the end of the day, at the end of the front straight, smoke started coming out of the exhaust. Had the car towed home, took the turbo off last night, and now it's en route to Blouch for inspection :(

Re: 2005 WRB weekend warrior

While the car is down, I also ordered a set of RCE T2 coilovers with GTWORK camber plates.

Those should be in in 4 weeks, right about the time my Volk 18x8.5 gloss black TE37s come in :)

So for now, car is down and I'm anxiously awaiting Blouch's response.

Re: 2005 WRB weekend warrior

I have an appointment in February for EFI to build me a stage 2 block.

This will include a turbo upgrade to either a Blouch 2.5XTR or ATP3076, as well as a switch to a FMIC and 3" inlet.

Very nice n congrats to a beautiful car, mine's the same color and currently sitting 325/324, besides the price of the car I'm roughly 6 grand into my build. Judging by your mods list your close or surpassed it w rims and suspension mods! Keep us updated and cheers to a happy( stress-free) build if that exists.. Subscribed!

Re: 2005 WRB weekend warrior: 20GXTR with meth and a blown turbo :T

Looks like i'm about to spend a lot more money :(

Turbo came back from Blouch all fine and dandy. Spoke to Mike and he said the turbo looked fine, except a bolt was missing from the bracket i had to keep the flapper shut (since I'm running an ewg). He was saying this would cause it to spool slower/lose power.

Finally got around to working on the car. Idles fine, but smoke comes out of the exhaust. No smoke out of oil fill. Misfire codes sporadically.

So I pulled the plugs, and the plug on cylinder 4 is bent. No compression there either.

So long story short, looks like I dropped a valve. New long block, here I come :(

Re: 2005 WRB weekend warrior: 20GXTR with meth and a blown motor :T

Been in close contact with [email protected]

They're going to build my motor/install/break it in in February. Since I'm building the motor, decided to up the power, so i'm going with an ams 750r rotated kit and supporting mods (ams fmic, some kind of el header, etc.).

Re: 2005 WRB weekend warrior: 20GXTR with meth and a blown motor :T

And here we go.

[email protected] EFI took apart the block and here's the damage. Looks like it may have been meth related. I don't have a failsafe on, and I'm trying to remember how much meth was in the tank when it blew.

Now I'm wondering if I should not use meth at all. I'm going with an AMS 750R rotated turbo kit and stage 2 block. Not sure if I need the extra power. Probably will still track this once or twice in the year, but i have an ae86 that may be my main trackday car.

Yeah it sucks, but I'm in good spirits about it.

I'm heavily leaning towards not running it on the car anymore.

Re: 2005 WRB weekend warrior: EFI motor build in progress

Some updates.

Block is being worked on at EFI. Still a few weeks out as they're working on my fuel system as well, in addition to finding a tuner (r.i.p. Chris :( )
