Which should provide more cornering capability?

The larger footprint with the 8's, or the stiffer lower sidewalls of the 18's?
Assuming I am keeping the circumference the same between the 18 and 17's.

The 8's, your side wall difference is going to be small. width though will be better, why not go more? :D

17 x 8s would be my opinion. Tires would be comparatively cheaper, so, assuming you were spending a fixed amount, you could get a better tire for the 17 at the cost.

Clarifying: If you were going to spend $200 per TIRE, you could get a better 17" tire for $200. The same tire in 18" would likely cost more, meaning you'd get less for the money. If I'm making sense.

it depneds on which tire you're running.

but a wider tire will have more "meat" during the weight transfer.

if you're talking 235/40 18 and 235/45 17 then it's tough to say. but the 8" width will stiffen up the 235 more than 7.5" but the shorter sidewall of the 18 will be stiffer.

I'd say go with the 17x8"

why not just get an 18x8. Hopefully you're not trying to get a set of TE37s for your MY04 STi, and if you're the 18's dont fit anyway.
