For winter's there actually better. Just because it helps cuts the through the snow and more weight per inch for better traction on ice.

On a WRX its somewhat common so I don't think issue with rubbing. I personally haven't seen someone that has 7.5 on a sti( that doesn't say much, i'm fairly new to the subbie scene too) I don't think you notice too much going to a smaller width just for DD, on a track you might notice it more. As your pushing your car a lot more then you would normally.
