So here’s my latest mod – fixed installation of Samsung Tab S 10.5 LTE Android tablet and Defi gauges. This can be an inspiration for some, while too insane for others 

I hated the stock Kenwood navi unit and wanted to install Defi gauges keeping the clean look in the same time. After investigating different options I decided that nothing will be better than iPad or Android tablet. Natural choice would be Nexus 7 but I did not like this tablet, the screen is not even close in terms of quality to Samsung’s AMOLED, not responsive and small – taking all the efforts into account it would be better to buy a standard 2DIN Android radio unit.

Finally I decided to go really big and chosen Samsung 10.5” Tab S installed above Defi gauges. Usually people install Defi gauges on the top but I did not want them making me blind when driving in the night (after all it’s the warning buzzer what really matters). In case of tablet you can always turn off the screen having navigation or audio running in the background.

Lot of work (custom gauge pod, custom panel, customization of the dash and covering it with leather) but final result is nice (if you don’t know how GR interior looks like you will most likely not realize it’s not a stock solution). Well at least for me ;-).

Working now on power supply mod (powering tablet directly from car battery, not through internal battery) and enabling OTG Host with charging (I want to use my backup camera and FM radio dongle, perhaps also USB DAC even though sound quality is amazing even now).

Dakota leather is almost the same as Subaru plastic trim

That's an insanely great job on the paint matching of the trim as well as the leather to match the dash. Where the hell did you get the leather!?

Also noticed you have different AC vents!

Thanks man! It's a standard Dakota leather used in BMW's, so a lot of car upholstery shops should have it - you can also use transparent leather finish to make its gloss perfectly matching plastic trims.

AC vents were adopted from Alfa Romeo Giulietta :) Small bonus is that now I can adjust the air flow or even close the vent completely.

Install/quality is fantastic.

My (unwarranted, unnecessary) opinion is that's too much screen... What are you typically displaying?

This might be indeed too big for some, but 7" is definitely too small for me. Perhaps 9" would be optimum here (Tesla users may laugh at this point) but I couldn't find any 9" tablet meeting all my other requirements. Actually after Nexus 7 but before Samsung I bought a 9.7" Huawei but did not like it. I usually display navigation with anti radar, sometimes Torque with big gauges.

Like I said, unwarranted...your car, your business and you did a hell of a job.

I have a Nexus and I understand that it can be a little smallish.

I think it looks killer!!!! And great job:) as far as integration they are coming out with all kinds of stuff but more for new cars already crazy systems to integrate with pre outs for amps and such couple more years you might have a lot more options.

On a simpler note I have been eyeballing this guy,

And this stupid deck, I call it stupid because Apple and alpine have some weird clash with each other from having wireless car play, suppose to be out in January and still on pre order....

It looks killer though, again incredible job!!!!!
