For your viewing pleasure: The Gentleman's STI

History: As I'm sure some of you have seen, I've been searching for a Limited for the last month or so, and one literally fell into my lap locally. I'm now the proud owner of UGM #576! Didn't think that would every happen! I'm having a blast with the car so far, and have already done more since I picked it up yesterday than I did with my previous car (2000 Maxima with suspension mods). It was also already at Stage 2, which is handy! :D

This is my DD/track/autocross vehicle. STM, Street Tire Modified, is a local class my region has created for the people that just want to come out and run. Basically run-what-you-brung, as long as it's on street tires (treadwear of 140 and above). I've only done 2 track days so far, but I plan to do more, soon... :D

Since 2011, I've been fortunate to secure two companies as sponsors, Feal Suspension and EBC Brakes. Feal provides suspension services for a variety of products, especially Hotbits and Whiteline, and they also offer a great alternative to the Ohlins FPS for the 05-07 STI in the form of a revalve for the OEM struts. EBC provides a variety of braking hardware.

Re: SubieEngineer's 2007 UGM STI Limited #576, The Gentleman's STI

Well, this past weekend I installed a Pioneer AVIC-D3 with the bluetooth module that I bought off Ebay. Install went off (relatively) painlessly. Hooked up the mike on the steering column and stuck the BT module behind the A/C Controls. I also mounted the GPS antenna underneath the clock on top of the air vents.

I've also done 1 autocross event so far. I've got a lot to learn about how this car responds on-course. I'm likely going to invest in RCE sways front and rear to help it rotate better. Don't want to touch the suspension quite yet. Or should I say, my wallet doesn't want me to!

w00t!! I love Limiteds. I tried to get one when I bought my 07 but wasn't available. When you described yours as "Gentleman's STI" I expected to see some scantily clad ladies :). Post more pics of the car and mods.

If you really want some coilovers I'll have some very low mileage T0's for sale in 2-4 weeks or so. You can PM if interested.

More Pics!

^ Thanks for the compliments! I'll have to take some more photos sometime soon. She's a little dirty right now, as I just went on a Dragon run on Sunday... I'm not sure if I'm interested in T0s at the moment, trying to keep my wallet from killing me in my sleep!

^^^Sweet...that series shows the importance of setting a decent amount of neg camber front and rear.

Good pics.

I wish I lived that close to the Dragon/Smoky Mtns! Awesome roads!
Yup, we've got the Dragon, Devil's Triangle, the Snake (NE TN), and the mountains around Asheville within a days' drive. :D

Awesome! Keep up the good work and welcome to the Limited club! ;) :D
Thanks! I like my Limited... Almost as plush as my Maxima, but a whole lot more fun to drive!

Re: SubieEngineer's 2007 UGM STI Limited #576, The Gentleman's STI

I managed to install the rear sway bar last night. The install was relatively painless, but I had too little clearance when I loaded the suspension (raised it on jackstands, then had to lower the car on the incline of some metal ramps because my jack didn't go high enough), so tightening the endlinks was a mild PITA. I've got it set on the middle setting, so I'll how how the car responds at AX tomorrow. No noticeable change driving around local roads, either. But I'm sure it'll be noticeable when I hit rough patches with one side.

So I did my first AX Sunday with just the RSB upgraded. Hit the first slalom and felt the back end come around with ease. Coming on the right side of the 4th cone and I felt the back end slide just as I wanted... And then it went to much. Insta 180 spin. Now I need to not be lazy and get the front one on!

Re: SubieEngineer's 2007 UGM STI Limited #576, The Gentleman's STI

Just a mild update... Spent some QT underneath my front end this weekend. Got around to changing my oil from the dealer's Penzoil synthetic blend to Amsoil pure synthetic 5w30. I was 725 miles overdue (crap) and the oil was nice and black when it came out. Not dark. Not brown. Black. I also used a Purolator PureOne oil filter. My intention is to run the Amsoil 5w30 3750, then another batch of the same 5w30 for 3750, and send the second batch off for analysis.

I also "fixed" my front lip... The slacker that installed it at my dealership didn't feed 3 of the bolts through both the bumper and lip. Took 5 minutes to fix his laziness.

I also attempted to install my RCE front sway bar... At 5pm knowing it would be dark in an hour. :D Needless to say I failed miserably since I didn't remove the subframe. I did managed to install the KB endlinks, but now the front clunks. Friday I'll get a chance to correct it all, I hope.

I'm also shooting for getting a protune in the next few months.

Re: SubieEngineer's 2007 UGM STI Limited #576, The Gentleman's STI

Slight update... I managed to fix my screwup. I had installed my RSB with the front Kartboy endlinks and installed the rear KB endlinks on the stock FSB. Crap. As it turns out, the rear endlinks are longer than the fronts and vice-versa. And there's no humanly way to install the FSB without at least partially removing the U-shaped subframe piece (I took the whole thing out, believe it or not). For reference, here are some photos:

Front endlinks side-by-side:

Rear endlinks comparison:

All endlinks comparison, rear on the left and front on the right:

The U-shaped subframe piece some have managed to keep installed (I don't know how, honestly):

Also, there are slight differences between the bolts necessary to remove between the years. on my 07, there's a tab that attaches below the radiator with I believe a 12mm screw. In the back of the front wheel wells are two pop tabs, one on either side. There's an extra 17mm subframe bolt on each side (versus the 04 instructions from Cobb). And I believe I had to remove some 12mm or 10mm screws that hold part of the plastic cover where the rear of the front subframe attaches.

Re: SubieEngineer's 2007 UGM STI Limited #576, The Gentleman's STI

Since I can't stop the infamous mod bug, I decided to invest in something useful: A boost gauge. So, I ordered an Omori 45mm with the steering column pod from J-Spec Tuning (NASIOC vendor). It should be here next week, and hopefully I'll install it over Thanksgiving.

On another note, I'm shooting for a professional tune sometime "soon." So, I called and spoke with a nearby tuner who suggested dumping the SPT catback in favor of something not so restrictive. My personal favorite is the Cobb, which is also an excellent match since I have a Cobb DP. Then I stumbled across these. At the price and one person's (so far) review, I couldn't resist! The CB is 3" from the midpipe (or resonator pipe, depending on who you ask) back to the tip, and will mate up to the stock or similar 2.5" DP. It also sounds very close to the Cobb CB without the Cobb price! I intend to call them in the morning and place my order. :D

Damn good price and looks good! I see the knock off buisness is boomin right now
No doubt!

Of course, when you can produce a product that's somewhat of a clone of a popular item at roughly 1/3 suggested retail, and you have Porsche proven products, you start to get noticed. My only real concern is longevity, and at the price point, not really much of a concern! Then again, just about any muffler will beat the SPT in terms of lack of restriction.
