Hi guys,

Will the 05-07 oem STI springs work with the 04 oem STI struts? Springs and struts going onto my 04 WRX. I did a search and read the FAQ and I'm pretty sure it should work, but just want to be 100% sure.

Cheers.

The only diff i know of between the 2 springs is the color. OEM 04 Sti springs are Pink.

05-07 are Black.

Yes, you can use '05 thru '07 springs with '04 STi struts. And it was the strut color which was pink on the 2004's. All of the years had black springs.

I found this on 05 springs, but not sure what it mean though...

and, from another thread:

It took months, but SOA finally got the right person to respond to me with full details on the springs of the 2004 and 2005 Impreza STI models.

To summarize:
2004 STI
Front:
Rate is 39.2 N/mm (224 lbf/in)
Bump Travel: 75mm
Rebound Travel: 95mm
Swaybar: 19mm
Rear:
Rate is 34.0 N/mm (194 lbf/in)
Bump Travel: 100mm
Rebound Travel: 100mm
Swaybar: 20mm

2005 STI
Front:
Rate is 39.2 N/mm (224 lbf/in)
Bump Travel: 65mm
Rebound Travel: 95mm
Swaybar: 20mm
Rear:
Rate is 34.0 N/mm (194 lbf/in)
Bump Travel: 85mm
Rebound Travel: 100mm
Swaybar: 20mm

What this means:
Less bump travel on the 2005 model could reasonably mean two things: A longer bumpstop or less bump travel in the strut. So whereas ultra-low springs like the Tein S-Tech were already a bad idea on the 2004 model, they are a REALLY bad idea on the 2005 model.

Bigger front swaybar on the 2005 model means crisper turn-in, less roll for probably more overal traction in corners, but perhaps a slightly more understeer biased balanced during long sweeping corners which may or may not be countered with the yaw rate feedback in the center diff.

And here is the email from SOA (not, I received many emals during the past couple months on this question, all of them saying "dear mr luhr, I have forwarded your question to the appropriate channels, sorry for the delay" and now this one finally is the answer I was seeking:

I have a set from my 04' up for sale if interested. As Got2Boost mentioned, the struts on the 04' were pink and the springs are black with no change except for the color of the strut housing in 05-06. So yes they will work on a 05-06 set.
