Hi all! I've got an 04 STi and I recently got a new clutch and front/rear shifter bushings. I found out during the install that the u-joint was busted on my driveshaft and I need to replace the whole thing. After checking prices and reading other DSS threads I'm thinking about a DSS aluminium driveshaft for about $480. I'm also looking as getting a rear diff crossmember bushing, and doing a tranny/diff fluid change with redline oil and not the recommended subaru oil. I've read that the DSS driveshafts are sometimes unbalanced and it may need to be sent back to the supplier to balance it. I also read that there will be some minor hammering of the DS tunnel to make it fit. I just wanted some opinions on what I'm doing, and some stories from people who were in a similar situation. Budget is a concern. Are there any other things I should look at doing while I'm getting this done? I've been having some trouble getting into 1st and 2nd gear, especially when the car is cold. I'm hoping the fluid changes will remedy that some.

Please post in the correct forum. THis has been moved to Drivetrain.

I have a DSS aluminum driveshaft in my 05 STI. I've also read a few accounts of people having fitment and balance problems with this driveshaft, however I believe that most of those accounts are people regurgitating things they read, without having any personal experience with the product.

My installer commented that the install "wasn't that bad at all". He had to bang the floor pan in a few places to clear the driveshaft, and we had to shim the driveshaft protection plate with a few washers after it rubbed when the car was on the dyno.

As for fluids, there really isn't anything wrong with the Subaru fluids - Extra-S in the tranny and Subaru LSD oil in the rear diff. The only other fluid I'd recommend is Motul Gear 300 75w90 in the tranny and PA90 in the rear diff.

The driveshaft was rubbing on something and needed washers? How would I know if I have that issue after mine is installed? The Subaru oil is extremely expensive for me, about 90$ a quart and need 6.. so I went to rallysport direct and they recommended the redline oil at 12$ a quart.

I think I'm abandoning the idea of the aluminium shaft, and I am looking for a stock replacement. I'm trying to keep my car as stock as possible and the shaft with it's irreversible hammering sounds bad. I also don't like the idea of it being unbalanced and uninstalling, shipping it,waiting, reinstalling it. I think the blue cans from that website look good for the LSD but I'm still not sure what tranny fluid to get.

Nobody will ever notice the hammering you need to do to make the aluminum driveshaft fit. I'd sell you my stock driveshaft if it didn't weigh a billion pounds. And the balance issue was, as mentioned, a problem with a few early units.

I ended up just buying a used stock driveshaft, was a tiny bit cheaper than aluminium. I've been driving the car pretty hard without the new driveshaft and it's still holding up with the busted ujoint so hopefully this replacement will be even stronger. Here's hoping for the best. I wish I could afford the carbon fiber one.
