Been happening that last week or so. It's been maybe 50-60 degrees in the morning. Nothing too cold, but when starting it I hear a very muffled squeal for a few seconds followed by a louder high pitch squeal that lasts a second and then it's business as usual. No more squeal. I've searched, and most point to the belt. I'm having a tough time thinking its a belt since my sti has 1700 miles on it. Any suggestions? My first sti, and every car has its noises. Am I being paranoid?

Double check the alternator belt tension. You should barely be able to press it in.

I would have to imagine they are still the tension belts from the the previous model.

Also depending on how cold it is the air pump makes a bit of noise...more pronounced on colder days, to warm for PS pump squeal yet

I had a 2008 and 2013 WRX that both made a light squeal when the clutch was depressed. Only happened when ambient temps were in a narrow range (40 - 60ish) and was only for the first few shifts. Once the engine temp needle moved off baseline, it disappeared. Was told that it was the TOB and not to worry unless it did't go away when the car warmed up.

So it took a bit, but I was able to replicate the noise in cooler weather and I'm 98% sure it's the power steering belt. Thanks for the input guys, like d0zxmustang said, just a minor annoyance.

When I got my 2015 it for sure squealed! Kind of embarrassing since I was showing it to my friends and fam and when I started it up it was squeal squeal squeal

Dad was even like wtf isnt this a new car -_-

Also got my car in oct-nov in Minnesota so it was a little nippy outside

Check your power steering fluid level.

My 2015 was doing this and then it got worse. I noticed my power steering fluid was near empty. The fluid expands when the car warms up so the squealing will go away, but once you get low enough it will always squeal.

Mine is either burning it, or has a small leak somewhere, but I have to fill it every 3-4 weeks. The reservoir holds very little fluid, so this can happen with a tiny tiny leak.

My car makes a squawking type sound on cold start ups. Sounds like the A/C compressor kicking on or something. The 2015 Crosstrek I drove as a loaner made the same noise. It sounds terrible, but I'm guessing it's normal for these cars. Also starting to develop a rattle near the rear window.... :/

I'm not sure if this is the same squealing I'm hearing. Maybe you guys can shed some light before I start a new thread. On cold starts with 20-40 degrees weather I let the car warm up before I drive. When I'm parked at work I have to do a 3 point turn. When I'm at a dead stop and I turn the steering wheel there is a loud squeal and it feels like I'm losing power steering. When I get home and have to make a sharp turn in a similar manner there is no squeal. I do not turn the wheel all the way as per the owners manual (don't turn the wheel full crank for more then 5 seconds). Is this the same or different issue? It's really embarrassing as I work at a Mazda dealership and it's not normal on our Mazda's. I got some laughing in my direction but that's okay I own an STi :)
