2008-2014 STi OEM Fuel Filter Replacement - Updated with Pictures - NOT "SOCK" FILTER

Updating this post again now that I finally got around to replacing my OEM Fuel Filter today. I hope this thread sheds some light for anybody that has recently hit 60k miles and is looking to replace their Fuel Filter. (Recommended replacement interval is 60k).

There are a lot of people on here and nasioc that think the OEM filter is just that "sock filter" that needs replacing, and so they recommend replacing the pump with aftermarket. That "sock" filter is NOT the one serviced in the FSM.

Here is what the filter looks like:

And here is the filter attached to the fuel pump. You can also see the "sock" filter in the background.

And here's a picture of the filter media in case y'all didn't believe me

Here are the parts required for anyone looking to replace their OEM Fuel Filter at 60k like the FSM recommends. You are welcome to change to an aftermarket pump at this point since you have to separate it anyway.

Fuel Filter: 42072AG140
Springs (Quantity 2): 42047AG000
Cushion (Quantity 3): 42043AG240
Gasket/O-Ring (Quantity 3): 42025AG070
Gasket/O-Ring (Quantity 1): 42025AG080
Clip: 42032AG000
Spacer: 42046AG020

Also there's a great write-up on nasioc here:

Hope that clears everything up

Re: 2008-2014 STi OEM Fuel Filter Replacement

My 2012 was just the little sock in the bottom of the pump assembly. Once you are in there it is two clips (which suck) and the fuel pump is out.

The DW65c being plug and play makes it the best bang for the buck versus an all OEM setup (price wise)

After finally taking my fuel pump out today, I discovered that there are a ton of people who assume the "sock" filter is the only filter.

See those "2 clips (which suck)", that big white assembly that the fuel pump is attached to?, THAT whole assembly is the replaceable Fuel Filter.

You can see the "sock" in the background too which comes with the pump, two different items people! The sock has a different P/N.

Updated first post with this info

Thanks for pointing that out! Helped me figure out all the confusion

Any way to verify if the filter is dirty without destroying the white assembly?

I'm experiencing a fuel delivery issue that my tuner has narrowed down to either a clogged fuel filter or a faltering pump. I figure if I bought both a new pump and that white assembly, if I could check the current filter without ruining the whole assembly I'd be able to return either the assembly or the pump depending on what I found.

Thanks!

I didn't try disassembling the filter itself, unfortunately. It looks like you might be able to pop some clips off to look at the filter media, but I'm not completely sure. I threw the old one away already, sorry!

Thanks for the post. Whats the P/N for the sock?
Unfortunately it doesn't come listed as a separate part, it's listed as one with the fuel pump. There is no mentioning of servicing the sock filter in the FSM either.

When replacing the fuel filter, can't all misc/other minor parts be reused?

Re: 2008-2014 STi OEM Fuel Filter Replacement - Updated with Pictures - NOT "SOCK" FI

Time to revive an old thread! I plan to bypass the in tank filter and add a filter in the engine compartment. Can anyone share their experience with doing this? I already have a spare pump assembly with a new walbro pump. I want to modify the assembly to bypass the filter. Is it as easy as running a fuel line from one fitting to another once the filter is removed? Also, any recommendations for a reasonably priced filter with replaceable media, or even using a Subaru 6 cylinder disposable filter for under the hood? Pictures would be great!

Why would you bypass the in tank filter? It's there to keep debris from grenading the pump. After converting to -AN line, I stuffed a 2 micron FuelLab filter under the rear seat. I have pics in my build thread, of replacing the fuel lines.

I don't have a link but I recall a thread where a 06-08 forester owner bypassed the in tank filter for the 03-05 forester under hood inline style
