Thanks to everyone who has added info to this thread. Very useful. The car is an 08, and I'm already on my second pump. When it too started getting dark fluid and pshhhhhs and light moaning, I knew there was no more putting this off. I did the install this past Saturday.

I used the barbed kit (Derale 13212). I added one 4-foot length of 11/32 hose from Pep Boys, and some Subaru fluid, two zip ties, and that's it.

On the bumper end, I installed the cooler itself using the supplied mounting posts. If you're not familiar, these are long plastic posts that you push through the fins of the cooler and through the fins of your radiator. Then you push their ends on, and sinch it tight. Think of them as a special kind of zip tie. I know this may seem sketch, but it's actually quite handy and secure, and there are pads included to keep the cooler from directly touching or rubbing up against the radiator. I have Hellas installed, so I mounted the cooler lower - it catches air coming into the big open area of the bumper cover. Here is a pic:

There is plenty of room in the lower corner there to pass two hoses up into the engine bay. Here is the routing of the hoses, taken from the top:

I used just 2 black zip ties to secure the two new hoses to the existing power steering lines.

Here though is where I deviated from what others have posted. After draining the fluid, I completely REMOVED this piece from the car (behind the reservior up against the shock tower), not to be reused:

Then I just connected the lines coming from the PS cooler onto the barbs where this hose was formerly attached, using the supplied clamps:

In the end it looks like this:

Replaced the bumper cover, filled and bled the system, and done.

Early results are promising. There are no leaks or untoward noises. The feel is the same, meaning no issues. Time will tell of course whether the fix works.

I just wanted to share with you guys, not only as a way of saying thanks to the rest of you, but also to show you can do it in a way that uses fewer fittings, and IMO actually looks more factory.

I bought one of these too.. but didn't install it. It's a 2-row Derale but twice as wide as the 4 row. Was thinking about strapping it (long plastic posts + pads that comes with the cooler) on the back of the top-mount intercooler instead for an easier install. Should work equally as well without removing the front bumper and etc.

Has anyone done this with a 2 pass cooler? My car makes this sound before my oil temperature gauge even registers anything and I only have 11k miles. It's been a problem since before that though.

I have super tones so I'd prefer to get a smaller cooler as long as it is adequate for the job.
Should work just fine with a smaller 2 row cooler. The one Subaru sells is quite anemic and works just fine.

I have a 2013 STI that I got in December. Last week was the first warm weather it's seen and after about a 45 mile highway drive, I noticed some hissing coming from the steering wheel. I did some research when I got home and found this thread and a few others. I decided to install a cooler and hopefully it will fix the issue. Here are some pics and a few minor issues I ran into.

I made my own mounting brackets with another support bracket mounted on the side. Notice how long the brass an fittings are that already came on the cooler.

Because the fittings that came on the cooler were longer than I had anticipated, I had to do a little cutting to the headlight and bumper. It was very minor and not a big deal. Looking at other pics of coolers from other threads, this cooler does have longer inlet and outlet fittings.

Removing the bumper is fairly easy. I've done it twice now and can probably have it off in under 5 minutes. I'd much rather do it this way so I can remove the TMIC without worrying about PS hoses.

Just ordered a Derale 4-pass cooler, I'm going to also drain/fill the fluid that's currently in the system while I'm in there. My only question is what fluid to use for a 2011? The Owner's Manual says "Subaru ATF" or "Dexron III". I'd like to use Subaru fluid, so I went to the dealer, but they gave me Subaru ATF-HP. Is Subaru ATF the same as Subaru ATF-HP? I've been trying to come up with answers, but I'm not getting a definitive answer.
According to the OM, they're different, but according to the label on the bottle, they're the same, the HP is just a newer version?

Thanks in advance

As long as it's Dexron III you're fine.

doesn't look like the HP is Dexron III and therefore shouldn't be used in the power steering.

I've been using a Dex VI compatible fluid for the last couple years and it's fine. I used to be into GMs and GMs word when Dex VI came out was to use it in all applications that used Dex III since they wouldn't be making Dex III anymore. It's lubricity, shear resistance, thermal stability, and cleaning properties are all improved. Our Subies seem to like it too.

Gents, ATF-HP is the correct fluid. Here is just one reference: http://www.iwsti.com/forums/gr-susp...-suspension-handling-stiffening/201384-gr-power-steering-fluid-changed-wow.html

I don't know what Dexron it is equivalent to but it is definitely what's in the car from the factory.
I saw that thread, but it seemed to pertain to 08's (even though '11's are part of the same generation). My concern is that in my '11 OM, there is a table with fluid specs and for Power Steering it states "Subaru ATF" or "Dexron III." Directly above that line, it shows Automatic Transaxle Fluid Specs* and it lists "Subaru ATF" or "IDEMITSU ATF-HP".

The fact that the OM makes a point to differentiate between ATF and ATF-HP leads me to believe there is a difference. The label on the bottle states otherwise though...which is why I was confused.

*I know we don't have Automatic Transmissions, however the OM is for all Impreza models.

For clarity, here's the page I'm talking about from my OM (from MySubaru.com, which is identical to my booklet)

UPDATE: My local dealer service department says Subaru ATF-HP replaces Subaru ATF/PSF
