Very helpful post. Just bought 2012 STi sedan and noticed on drive home that brake lights not coming on soon enough. Could be sitting on brakes at stoplight and not showing unless pushed pedal harder. Allowed me to fix it in less than 3 minutes without having to return to dealer who is 250 miles away. Thanks.

Thanks for posting this! I've only had my car a little over a week, 2012 GR Hatch, but I noticed the brake lights not coming on soon enough just yesterday. It's quite likely that with engine braking and light pedal use that I was coming to stops with no brake lights until I was actually stopped.

I knew what had to be done, as I'd done a cruise control install on my `99 Legacy, but had been expecting 2 nuts for adjustment. Your instructions made it a 1 min job with a very different design. My brake lights now engage with 1/4-1/2" of pedal deflection, and just before the pads start engaging the rotors...perfect! For whatever it's worth, my brake light switch is also black.

I have a 2006 wrx hatchback. Top light is coming on when I brake but not the 2 lower lights. Does this mean the switch is OK? Filaments look good on the bulbs and the main lights go on but not the brake lights. Could it still be the bulbs? Fuse is good. Any other ideas?

Thank you for the helpful post and to the poster that took the pics. I have a 2011 STi sedan and was getting the ABS light coming on the dash after driving about 20-25 minutes from a cold start, scanned it and got the code: "BLS Off - 0054"

Not sure if it is the adjustment itself or just a bad Brake Light Switch. Anyways, I just adjusted it, but had to go in with the switch and not out, went out and my brake lights stayed on without depressing the brake pedal, ...should be able to tell if the adjustment worked after the test ride. Good helpful folks here and very educational forum.

Just to update, went and got a new '13 GV STI about a month ago, and before we left the dealership lot, I noticed the brake lights not coming on soon enough. Nothing has changed in two years with these's STI's:

First, brake switch adjustment. Second, headlamp adjustment. Third, hesitation around 4k rpms WOT. :facepalm

My switch was bad. One of the two sets of contacts inside was full of carbon and needed to be cleaned. I found that to be a more convenient way to deal with it than to go buy a part. By the way, my switch says Niles on one side and Nissan on the other side.

I believe this may not have been a problem if the switch contact would have had some dielectric grease on the contacts.

Thanks for posting this. My 2012 STi has had the same problem since it was new, noticed people getting really close to me because of no brake lights while moving in very slow traffic.

Here is a picture of what my switch looked like before adjusting:

This thread just helped me. On my new Crosstrek that switch is actually tied to the release/lock mechanism for the automatic shifter. My switch got so bad over time that it wouldn't press in at all and the shifter was locked unable to get out of Park. This solved that.
