Default Re: 2005 STi - STU Autocross & DD

BORING HISTORY:

My first car worth noting and what got me into Autocrossing was a '97 Z28 Camaro:

To me back then, imports were lame and good 'ole American muscle couldnt be beat. I ran this car in ESP (moderate suspension mods on the car). I got as much seat time as I could, and eventually race rubber to try to tame the over-torqued, under-gripped pig of a car. It was a losing battle. Best PAX in this car on used race rubber was a 925. I was finally fed up with making a payment on a car that required repairs often and was horrible on gas. Up for sale the Z28 went...

I figured if you cant beat 'em, join 'em (), so in its place came a gently used (170k miles on the odo!) '95 Miata R:

The car was a blast. The R-package on these cars included Bilsteins and a slightly lowered suspension, larger sway bars, and full OEM spoiler treatment. Some previous owner had installed a Hard Dog Hard Core Double Diagonal roll bar (try saying that 5 times fast!), so it looked like a pretty serious little autocrosser! I installed a new top (courtesy of the seller) and proceeded to enjoy no payment and a low gas bill. I attended one event in the car, unprepped on stock tires in ES and ended up with an 822 PAX. A sort of ok jumping-off point, considering my first events in the Z28 were mid-700 PAX...

Summer came in AZ and no A/C (another R-package perk...less weight! haha) was much worse than I thought it was going to be. I wanted to turn the car into an Autocross-only car, but finances dictated otherwise, and I actually sold the car back to the guy I bought it from for a similar price. Not a bad deal.

So with the money, I picked up a Miata-like car with ice cold A/C, a 2002 S2000:

Due to the shortage of well-priced, clean AP1 (2.0L) S2000's here in AZ at the time, I ended up buying this car on EBay in Texas. Flew out with the wife and drove 17 hours back. She was just overjoyed! >sarcasm<

About a week after getting it home, I Autocrossed this car on the too-small Barum Bravarus (...yeah me too) tires it came with. I did horribly... PAX of 806. I found out later the alignment was actually about 0.5 degrees positive on all 4 corners . But no excuses, I didnt drive my best either

Lacking the time to attend events (hey gimme a break, I had a Master's Degree to finish!), I never ran this car again. Instead, I wasted a bunch of money on parts for a car I was doing nothing more with than daily-driving...

I added the OEM lip and rear spoiler, cleared the nasty amber in the headlights, upgraded to a Bilstein PSS9 coilover suspension, and added a T1R full 70mm catless single exhaust. The car sounded like a baby F-1 car... no "Honda fart-can" sound at all. The picture above is before I sold it, sans coilovers/exhaust. The car was ridiculously low on the PSS9's, for no reason other then looks. Stupid, but fun .

I loved this car, but after finding out that the wife and I had a little one on the way (, ), it had to go for something with a back seat. The wife thought I was going to be devastated, having to give up the 2-door convertible for a 4-door family car. Having a long-time appreciation for Subaru and the STi, I of course knew right away that my "4-door family car" would not exactly be a Camry...

I ended up finding the perfect STi for me ('05, stock power, sold by original owner, WRB or AW, <30k miles, <$25k at the time) before the S2k was sold, but I had to jump on it.

The car came with:
  • Whiteline 24mm adjustable F & R swaybars
  • STi Pink springs
  • STi F & R Strut Tower Braces
  • Kartboy short shifter
  • Perrin short ram intake
  • 245/40R17 BFG Sport tires.
.
So we begin...

First up, the tires...
The previous owner was good enough to include the OEM Bridgestone Potenza RE070 tires (225/45R17) at about 60% life remaining along the the BFG Sports that were on it. The BFG Sports were loud. I mean really loud. It sounded like a lifted offroader with 36" mudders going down the freeway. Needless to say, I had the OEMs put back on and there was an instant improvement in road noise.

Next up, fluids...
.

FLUIDS

Next order of business was to change out all the fluids in the car:

OIL:
Mobil1 10W30 Full Synthetic
Used at ~27k mile change
The was my old standby from previous cars. The car used about a quart of this in the 5k miles and 1 Event it was run. After doing some reading here and other sources, I decided to switch to a Zero weight.

Mobil1 0W40 Full Synthetic
Used at ~32k mile change
I instantly noticed easier starting with this oil. I only ran this for 3k miles, since after doing some more research, I wasnt 100% confident in Mobile1's shear resistance under hard competition driving. Still used about a quart over the 3k miles and 2 Events it was run.

**Current** "German" Castrol 0W30 Full Synthetic
Used at ~35k mile change
Maybe its a placebo effect, maybe not, but the car just seems to run better with this oil. Though its a 0W30, it actually seemed less watery than the 0W40 Mobile1 when adding. My only complaint is it cant be purchased in gallon jugs ($$$).

TRANS:
75W-90 Valvoline Dino Oil
Used at ~27k mile change

REAR DIFF:
Subaru 75W-90 LSD Oil K0305Y0900, previously K0904AA080
Used at ~27k mile change

COOLANT:
Genuine Subaru Coolant SOA868V9210
Used at ~27k mile change

BRAKE FLUID:
Motul RBF600 Synthetic DOT 4
Used at ~32k mile change

POWER STEERING:
Motul Dexron III
Used at ~32k mile change

The Miata was just so tossable...I know it sounds cliche, but its really true...stock curb weight on that thing was around 2300 lbs. To me, there's just nothing like it on a tight course. It had no power so on-throttle grip was never an issue. LOTS of fun...I will pick up another as a toy when I have the extra cash laying around...

The S2k was nearly as tossable, but had power to go with it. The best word I can think of to describe it is precise (also cliche, I know). I never really got to set the car up for anything but "spirited" daily driving with the coilovers, but after I got them on with a good set of tires, the car felt really good.

Honestly though, the STi is just in another league in my opinion. All the grip when you want it and power to spare. I mean, it has its shortcomings like most any other car, but even after my very first event in this car, I just couldn't believe how much fun it was to grip AND go fast. I never had both at the same time before!

10/12/08 - First event in the new car:

Mod Snapshot:

STi JDM Pink Springs
STi strut tower braces, F & R
Whiteline 24mm front adjustable swaybar (soft)
Whiteline 24mm rear adjustable swaybar (middle)
Kartboy swaybar endlinks
Kartboy short shifter

Feel:
Car was understeering. Started tire pressures at 34F/34R, but raised rear each run in an attempt to get the car to rotate. Ended up at 34 front, 37 rear. Understeer still present but improved.

Best PAX: 895 (tires at 34F, 37R)
Placed 2/7 in class, 51/105 overall

I was pretty happy with an 895 the first time out with the car!

11/9/08 - Slower but Faster!

Sadly, no pics...

Changes since last event:
Adjusted rear swaybar from middle setting to stiff setting.
Added Goodridge SS lines with Motul fluid.

Mod Snapshot:
STi JDM Pink Springs
STi strut tower braces, F & R
Whiteline 24mm front adjustable swaybar (soft)
Whiteline 24mm rear adjustable swaybar (stiff)
Kartboy swaybar endlinks
Kartboy short shifter
Goodridge SS lines

Feel:
Stiffening the rear bar helped quite a bit. Started tire pressures at 34F/37R for comparison, and the car oversteered. Backed off to 34F/34R, then finally to 34F/32R, where the car felt pretty neutral. It was becoming very apparent that I needed more tire than the stock worn RE070 had left in them. Also, jusging by the wear on the outer edge of the tires and the car feeling like its fighting for corner grip, more front camber in front was needed.

Best PAX: 875 (tires at 34F, 32R)
Placed 1/9 in class, 49/136 overall

Faster in Rankings, but lower PAX. Many complained of a "hot shoe" driver that day ruining their PAX scores with a ridiculous FTD, but I think the rest of us were just too slow!

12/14/08 - Just Drive Better...easy right?

Not an action shot, but very nice nonetheless. Taken by a much better photographer than myself. See here for more: nativexpat

Changes since last event:
Added Ferrodo DS2500 brake pads.

Mod Snapshot:
STi JDM Pink Springs
STi strut tower braces, F & R
Whiteline 24mm front adjustable swaybar (soft)
Whiteline 24mm rear adjustable swaybar (stiff)
Kartboy swaybar endlinks
Kartboy short shifter
Goodridge SS lines
DS2500 brake pads

Feel:
Car seemed to want to oversteer again at first even at the same 34F/32R pressures as last event. I think it was mostly my driving with the new pads, and maybe partially the additional wear on my daily-driven tires. I kept the same pressures and managed to improve each run.

Best PAX: 891 (tires at 34F, 32R)
Placed 3/11 in class, 59/126 overall

Slower in Rankings, but higher PAX. Who knows, but I had fun! 900 here I come...

2/8/09 - Wet and Wild!

Rain. In Arizona. On event day. Who woulda guessed...

Obviously not my car, but a nice older Impreza showing off his AWD in the..ahem...less-than-ideal conditions...

No pics of my car. Again.

Changes since last event:
Added Ingalls camber bolts in front. Went from -1 deg front camber to -2.2 deg front camber.

Mod Snapshot:
STi JDM Pink Springs
STi strut tower braces, F & R
Whiteline 24mm front adjustable swaybar (soft)
Whiteline 24mm rear adjustable swaybar (stiff)
Kartboy swaybar endlinks
Kartboy short shifter
Goodridge SS lines
Ingalls camber bolts, front (now -2.2 deg)

Feel:
Due to the wetness, comparing this event to last is a ridiculous notion. The car did grip and brake surprisingly well in the wet with the worn RE070s. I'll be keeping the same setup for next event (as long as its dry!) to see how the Ingalls camber bolts affected the car.

Best PAX: 903 (tires at 34F, 32R)
Placed 1/2 in class, 35/124 overall

Obviously, AWD helped me here, but FTD was set by a RWD car, so who knows! I'll take the 900, thank you very much
