Default Advice buying an STi

Hello there, I currently own an 05 Subaru Legacy GT and I really love the car, but there have been a plethora of problems since owning this vehicle. I bought the car when it had about 130k miles on it, but the reason I was willing to buy it with so many miles was because the previous owner had just installed a brand new engine in it. And since I've owned it, it seems like I've had so many problems, typically regarding the engine. And I know for sure it was a new engine in it and not just the previous owner lying about it.

So my question is, for you owners out there that own a WRX or STi, do you have frequent problems regarding your car? I know that sometimes you just get unlucky but it seems like more than that at this point. I've always heard great things about reliability in Subaru's throughout the years but I just haven't really felt that.

And also, do any of you know of similar cars to an STi, based on performance, all-wheel drive, and manual? I know about VW R's and R32's, but those are the only ones that have really caught my eye. I'm looking to spend around $20,000 on a car 4-8 years old, thank you!

Owning an STi is a bit like snorting some meth. After you get used to it, everything else just feels disconnected, like you know man?.....just give me one more hit, 'kay.

I had an LGT Wagon and modded the crap out of it. Nothing ever broke. Why? Reliability mods first, solid, conservative tune - not every single HP needs to be picked off the table, and how many pulls did it take to get the MAF scaling right? Thorough maintenance and good fluids. And some luck.
