Default Jumping from BMW to Subaru...

So I’ve owned Japanese cars — Honda, Toyota, And Nissan — my whole life. Those cars were easy to work on. Well I just bought a 2011 BMW 550i back in January. This thing has been a nightmare. I won’t go into all the details, but I would never recommend anyone own one of these if you’re not competent in BMW — I am not competent in BMW. If you’re curious about how badly BMW messed up on the N63 engine, google “Bang BMW settlement” and you’ll see where BMW got sued in a class action. I did not google well enough before I bought this nightmare.

So I am wanting out, and I am looking to go back the Japanese route. I have always loved the WRX STi. I am thinking about purchasing in the next 3-6 mos. For someone who has never owned a Subaru, is there any literature, or links, someone can provide me to read up on? Is the WRX STi prone to problems like BMWs have been? In the BMW V8, the engines run at normal operating temperature at 240°. This leads to premature valve seal failure and that costs $7000-9000. That’s just one issue. There are plenty others.

Another thing I love about the WRX STi: a 6 speed manual transmission. My 550i is an automatic.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I see there is an FAQ/Newbie forum. I will give that a peruse. For some reason earlier it would not let me read.

The sti and the EJ257 is not like the N63. The sti doesnt have the oil leaks, turbo failures, coolant lines, vacuum lines, timing chain, valve seals, pressure accumulator, vacuum pump, high pressure pump, coolant pumps, aux pumps, starter motor, and vanos problems of the N63 engine. Do your fair share of research on here but the EJ257 is nothing like the N63. Yes the EJ257 has its flaws and does even have a class action going on for the engine but still i can tell you its nothing like the N63 in all aspects. Yes the sti has been known for engine failure but i believe there are more than just one reason as to why that happens.

Check and change your oil often, do your maitinence early, drive the car correctly, and mod accordingly and responsibly. The sti will be a great, fun, and enjoyable car.

Subarus are not perfect cars!

* Subarus are not particularly expensive, not even STIs.
* Subarus do have some issues.
* Subaru tend to handle very well even with their heavy feeling steering. Some People can not get over this. Generally they are people who are willing to deal with RWD.
* Subarus tend to be under-powered for how well they handle. The after market for the STi is awesome. There cars are dialed in by many competent shops. That said they are different enough to warrant finding a shop with extensive experience with them.

You can make/build whatever you like with an STi. All depends what you want, what you like, how much work you are willing to do, and how much you are willing to pay - just like any other car!!!

* AWD has benefits far greater that given credit for - even on perfectly dry terrain.
* AWD has disadvantages too. Lower efficiency, higher weight, and higher cost.
* Plenty of STis reach considerable mileage with nothing but maintenance - which I won't detail, but is not nil after 100K.
* Past issues have been ring-land failure, and bearing failure.

IMHO, to justify its' price, the S209 needs to perform at least as well as my moderately powered 05 built beater, and even that might not convince me to buy one cause my next STI isn't likely to be moderately powered.

Thanks all for the replies. Agree with the poster about who said the STi engine is not the N63. Nothing is the N63. It’s an engineering nightmare. BMW wants a 400 HP V8 twin turbo engine that also got 21 MPG on the highway. What it really got them was a headache. A big one.
